Wow...

I dusted off the Phish tunes in the iPod... an old vintage iPod i might add. Has a much warmer sound than the new iTouch things out now... just kidding. It all came back to me what it was like for me in the 90s. I just watched that film "Hype" at another members recommendation, and it got me thinking about the 90s. I got REAL tired of the grunge thing REAL fast. Pearl Jam 10 was cool but I just found the majority of the Genre crap. The Metal scene was subsequently deflated and crap too. Iron Maiden was putting out poo, Anthrax wasn't doing anything for me after Persistence of Time. And then I got dragged unwillingly to a Phish show and found this feller named Trey.

That guy is pure Genius.

Anyone who is into Guitar but can't stand Phish, and I can sympathize due to the majority of the disheveled fanbase they acquired, should at least give them a shot.

I recommend the Hoist record. It is straight up Rock, and very little of what i call "Silly Phish Philler"

If Jazz is your thing check out "Run Like an Antelop" of of Lawn Boy... that's some mighty fine fusion

anyway... anyone else ga ga over Trey at one point or another?

Saw Phish in concert in 1996. I was never a fan but along for the ride with a group of "Phish-heads". The show was fun, mainly because i got beyond intoxicated, but the music wasn't bad. Just not my cup of tea. My main problem with them is I like music with meaningful lyrics and theirs always seemed too off the wall for me. Trey is a fairly nice player though, can't say he isn't just because I am not a Phish fan. I do remember several nice guitar solos from that concert.

I totally agree with the lyric thing there. I think that's why i had to get "gagged and blindfolded" to go to the show also in 1996ish. I got past that eventually. I do find though that the lyrics are much better once they moved away from the Jazz thing. I think back in the early days they probably didn't want to even bother with lyrics but I suppose felt they had to toss something in. But that's speculation. The Lyrics for Esther i do like however, as off the wall as they are. At least they tell an epic story to some extent.

GREAT TUNE btw. I was noodling around with Divided Sky yesterday. I'm gonna switch over to that... used to know the main lick pretty good but good time to work on the rest... or as much as possible.

I've saw literally dozens of phish shows in the 90's! For a good long while I was inthralled with trey's pursuit of sustain (see divided sky for an example of this).

their "vintage" stuff is without a doubt superior to their more recent efforts. "Scent of a mule f/Bela Fleck" and "Wolfmans Brother" remain among my favorite works. Of course "Fluffhead", "possum" and "Harpuah" are great for comical lyrics as well.

Even their more main stream work like, "If I could (I would)" F/ Allison Kraus, and "Sample in a jar" are enjoyable.

If your into the rock opus type thing I would strongly suggest the Gamehenge stuff. It was treys masters thesis from his college days> makes for some interesting listening!

Also worth mention is Fishman's use of a vaccum cleaner as an instrument. YES... You read that correctly, I said vaccum cleaner! Which he either played butt nekkid or in a dress.

Overall, their are a group of master musicians. A bit silly at times, but without a doubt a very talented bunch!

Yeah some serious sustain... saw them in 94 and he struck a note during a solo, when i came back from getting a beer the thing was still ringing... kidding of course. I'd love to get my hands on that Paul Languedoc custom of his. I saw Neil Young join him on stage once and picked one up... I begged and pleaded for him to put it back on the stand and leave. I like Young's acoustic playing but next to treys clear melodic bliss, that noise and feedback he was emitting was just ruining it.

Wish i still had my cassette of Gamehenge.
