That time for me will come when/if I ever get "good enough" to play at our local blues jam. I go out there every week and sit and watch and it's my goal to make it up there and play one of these days. I'm going to try a few beginner open mic nights before then but I really have my mind set on playing at the blues jam because it looks fun but also there are a lot of pretty good guitarists out there and that would be the point at which I could say I was happy with my skills or how I had progressed.

Those moments....most should come when the music comes together and sounds great,to your ears, not only when you feel like you've impressed someone.
One lady told me I "was a helluva blues guitarist",not sure how she meant it I said thank you anyway. :?

I stop playing for a while to focus on family and a career to put food on the table. So now i'm falling in love all over again with playing, but a recent moment was when a few fellers here got together for fun to muck about on some Floyd tunes. One of the Tunes we played was Time. When we played back the recording for one of the Mixers who is in a working band and who's opinion I fully respect commented that I "Nailed the solo perfectly", it gave me a very warm feeling.

The best compliments are from other players because they know what you go thru to get to that point or are in the process of it themselves.

My favorite compliment came from my former teacher who said lets get together and just jam...maybe we can do a few things together...

got me thinking about how incredible compliments can be!

The easiest answer is not to accept compliments. The punk scene here is particularly sycophantic and hypocritical. The amount of times I've seen people come off stage, then some oik kisses their rear end with 'oh you were great mate'. The artist goes about there business then the oik runs em down to their mates.
I saw that for years, now the only person who tells me if I was any good is me.
I just smile politely, say thank you, then forget about whatever anyone has said. Compliments don't wash and criticisms are never harder than my own.

A few years ago I was sitting on the bed playing away while my wife was folding the laundry, when I looked up she was just staring at me and said how good I had become. That was enough for me. :D

What makes it all worth while for me:

Is when, after stumbling over some passage I'm learning, it not only becomes suddenly fluid, I've changed it up a bit, made it make sense and fit my own ideosycrasies.

This happens over days, so one has to keep at it, by crackie.

i am by far my worst critic at everything i do. my boss has actually scolded me for being too hard on myself and not having more self-esteem. i play with family members who constantly tell me i sound good. still, i know i can always do better. maybe i should talk to dr. phil.

Well it always feel good to hear a compliment. I have set the bar so high that I never feel I am that good of a player. On the other hand I can be the guy talking to the lead player after a show or the guy that stops and will spend an hour with a kid trying to learn a piece on his stoop. I totally detest arrogant players who are rude and think they are much better than they are. Music is a gift that everyone should share.

Well said man, music is a gift everyone should enjoy, not that just one cheeky little show off should take away. I get very frusterated when I come accros a player who thinks there way better than they are....I hate that

I also agree with Straycat. Wise words, wise words. :D

Every time when I play and my wife walks in and says to me how she loves to hear me play! That makes it all worth it to me!

That's about how I feel too. Except that there aren't too many kids who ask me to help them learn anything, other than my brother. But he won't ever practice.
