I'm sure any one who plays an instrument or something in life that takes a lot of hard work to get right knows what i'm talking about. That one moment after hours of practising were someone just says to you: "wow! Your really good! I wish I was as good as you!" (or something like that :) ).

It really feels good and honestly I think the only reason I've kept up playing bass and guitar is because of these moments. They can come at the most random times when your just playing a few simple pieces. Or sometimes you don't get them for weeks. I'm pretty sure but one of these moments elevates a musicians playing 10 fold!

Who else loves these moments?

Moved to a new place with people upstairs. Not used to it and I didnt know if they could hear me practice. I met the couple upstairs a while back and they say the actually enjoy listening to me. I apologized for behind loud but took it as a compliment.

Who DOESN'T like to here that they can play the guitar good? :D Or anything else for that matter? If you can be told you're good at something that you enjoy, then you know what your calling is 8)

Oppositely, if someone says you suck? Should you give up? Or just practice harder?

Not necessarily either. If someone says I suck than that's their opinion and who can argue with that. Thankfully, everyone I know has had a bit more tact than that but there's always a context.

Last time, I was with two other guys (guitarist and drummer) who were hardcore metal players. I'm a fairly mellow jazz bassist ... in nice words, they said I sucked. Yep, for metal that would be very true and I 100% agreed. But I'm not going to practice metal harder because of it.

What if a jazz great (say Kenny Burrell) dropped by and he said I sucked? Hmmm ... something to think about but ... does it mean I'm bad or does it just mean that what I always thought was a jazz styling isn't? Or does it just mean that he doesn't think it is?

Who knows? If my boss says I suck, well now we have a problem but even then, you need to dig into the context. So I just don't let those comments phase me. The first thing in your mind should be "why" not "what should I do about it." There may be nothing you need to do about it at all.

One thing I have discovered is that the people who are inclined to say things like that are not the people whose opinions you should take very seriously.

Most good guitarists I know are very encouraging and generous with their praise. 8)

What I meant is we take praise as being the truth but not such with criticism because of the human nature of most people and the ability to critic rather than compliment.

It always feels great and makes all the practice wortwhile when your playing is praised by your peers especially if it's someone that you have looked up to for years.

When people say I suck I say, "Geta life, other than making a complete fool out of yourself".

I've been told I'm good a bit, but I reckon that they're just saying it....But still it makes me feel good :)

Well it always feel good to hear a compliment. I have set the bar so high that I never feel I am that good of a player. On the other hand I can be the guy talking to the lead player after a show or the guy that stops and will spend an hour with a kid trying to learn a piece on his stoop. I totally detest arrogant players who are rude and think they are much better than they are. Music is a gift that everyone should share.

It really makes me feel good when my uncle (who is teaching me) gives me a good review or when my mom (who usually only says TURN THAT DOWN! :x ) tells me i sound good. It helps me 2 push through the rough patches! My dear dad is so positive about my playing...he always wants me 2 practice hard, & keep trying...God love him

Well said man, music is a gift everyone should enjoy, not that just one cheeky little show off should take away. I get very frusterated when I come accros a player who thinks there way better than they are....I hate that

Yeah I notice that too, all good musicians would rather I got better, and are prepared to help me do so, than keep me down.

My bassist is theory trained beyond belief. His mom's a music teacher with absolute perfect pitch (yes I tested her). First thing he did when he found I know little past chord structure was set about teaching me a bit.

I'm not at all threatened by his knowledge. I got the drop on him with hearing.

make the musicians around you better and you'll sound better.

If your wondering why I made this post it was actualy or the opposite... I got a negative comment and ut got me thinking about how incredible complaments can be!

I do get those awesome moments though... Like a week ago at our band practises when I saw the look on my drummers face as I played the bass solos for good times bad times by led zepplin. He was "amazed", that felt cool! And hey he's the drummer so he should understand good bass!

Or a couple weeks ago when I was playing my harmonica in te school hallway and all of the sudden the musical kingpin of my town (he works for Disney) burst in to the hall way and says "kid can you play harmonica for me in an upcoming show, your REALLY good!" lol I was just jamming on a twelve bar with my buddy!

So those times were pretty great!
