Whiskey In the Jar is actually an Irish folk song thats hundreds of years old. Metallica's version is horrible IMO.

I aware of it being an old irish folk song.Ive heard it how it was, thin lizzys and metallicas and i think metallicas is the best. Are you a thin lizzy fan then?

Not really bro, I just don't like Metallica's version. Sounds like they are just goin through the motions. A good Irish rock band playing it in a club in Dublin or Belfast is how it should be done. 8)

True. Especially "The Phantom of the Opera" and "Don't Cry For Me, Argentina."

I was going to say, "Ain't no such thing as a cover better than the original," but then you went and proved me wrong with the one and only exception in the entire universe.

Nearly all of Joe Cocker's covers are better than the originals. I would include "She Came in Through the Bathroom Window" and "The Letter" to this as well.

But for my money, the best cover of all time is Snoop Dogg's "Gin and Juice" performed by The Gourds.

Manfred Mann's cover of "Blinded by the Light" , originally by Bruce Springsteen, is the best cover of any song I have heard. They made it their own in such a way that they "own" the song, and Bruce's original is now considered an afterthought.

Ugly Kid Joe did a fantastic version of "Cat's In The Cradle"

I assume you are ONLY referring to the recording quality, right??

I agree -- best cover ever. Mann also did (I believe) two other Springsteen tunes that were also amazing: "Spirits In The Night" and "I Came For You"

Patsy Cline's "Crazy" is much better than the Willie Nelson version. I suppose that's a gray area since Nelson wrote it... Patsy Cline made it famous and i think the Willie Nelson version ive heard was recorded after the fact so does that make it a cover of his own tune? either way... I just like that song as done by Patsy Cline.

Mann did do those covers and all of them are better than the original IMO.

The Ramones' "Wonderful World" is a favorite of mine too.

Locomotive Breath - W.A.S.P

Don't get me wrong, the Tull version is great but I think I like it "heavied up" a bit more.

I just listened to this for the first time. I like the guitar work and the tempo, but the singer's weird pronunciation ruins it for me. "The train, it wan stup goin'..." Huh‽

yeah Blackie mushed the vocals for sure, but I dig it more for the guitars too.
