Then I started wondering if it would be possible to take the cello and meld it into a guitar format.

Hi lite ash stratocaster:

OK, so we'll do carved or steam+pressure bent front and back, nice and thin for resonance. Thin vertical sides to the body too, though we'll make them shallower than a cello for ease of handling.

We'll put some nice f-holes in the front to emphasise the cello look, and maybe we'll source some flame-type timbers to make it look more like a classical instrument - maple on the back and spruce on the front, just like a cello. We could also do a brown sunburst finish, again to link to that orchestral heritage.

Probably we'll go from four to six strings: it's a guitar after all. And maybe we'll fret the neck if we don't want a fretless instrument, but we'll do a dark wood fingerboard to again make a link to the traditional instrument.

We might replace the wooden tailpiece with a metal one, but it can be anchored at a button on the tail end of the guitar so it will look a lot like the cello. And the bridge will have to be a bit different but it can still be a floating type wooden one, perhaps in rosewood?

So, slap it all together and... Ooo, look: we've invented the Gibson Archtop:

P.S. Your post made my day!

Ah, I misunderstood. So perhaps something more like this then?

He seems to have plenty of strings, so I guess he could tune some of them like a cello. But where's his bow...?
