I finally got around to posting another couple of tracks for y'all to hear on purevolume. :D So now there's something to listen to that's more current than the King of the Blues thing. When you've been playing blues for slightly over a year six months makes a huge difference. Two of the songs were from a jam last Tuesday and the other is an instrumental cover of song I play at church. I recorded it for a slideshow on a DVD my Dad did last summer.

We do our own version of Say What at the jam. It's more like Albert Collins or something, no wah pedal. That's me playing rhythm at first. Then I take the second and final solos, including the quiet part. The drummer was teaching me about dynamics earlier that night and he decided to give me a pop quiz in the middle of that song. The other guitar player is Guitar Shorty's sideman, Sam. He plays a G&L Strat through an old tube amp. I was playing my Squier Affinity Strat through my Fender Deluxe VM and my Screamin' Eagle from sbnpedals.com. It's basically a tubescreamer.

On Texas Flood you can tell it's me because of all the Albert Kingishness going on. I didn't know that the song we were going to play was Texas Flood or I would have played the intro. But all the information I got before we started was "slow blues in G". The other guitarist is another kid my age. It was the first time I'd ever played blues with someone else my age, which was very cool. And he was really good too. He's the one with a more distorted tone. He had a Les Paul through a Marshall and I had the same rig exactly that I used for Say What.

Here's the link to my purevolume page, http://www.purevolume.com/Texasguitarslinger

Let me know what you think, any constructive criticism would be much appreciated. Your opinions really helped me improve my playing back when the King of the Blues contest was going on. :)

Very nice Texas... You have a very good scene of the music... the live tracks (although not the best recordings volume wise) very good playing and nice tone to your rig… Bravo form me indeed… cant wait to here some more….

Cheers
Bill

Say what!? TexBex, you really sound good. Your tone is real good. With your equipment, it looks like some people don't know what they're talking about, amp especially. I really admire your talent and dedication. I enjoy listening to your playing as much as I would anybody. Keep it coming!

I listened to all three tracks, outstanding Texas! You smoked the LP player  , not dis'ing, just, you sound better and your control and style are better. It is tough, I know, slugging it out in the trenches but it helps to get through the tough parts when you're good and you are getting real good. 8)

 :) :) 8) Awesome Texas I'm glad to see you getting out there and getting some more experience under your belt. You are fortunate to be in such a rich blues environment and have the mentors that are working with you. I think I'll have to join Pure Volume just so I can be your 1st fan...

PS Did you play all the parts on Mighty To Save and over dub... I like the vibrato tastefully done...

Cool, thanks. :D

On Mighty to Save I played all the guitar, and the bass on everything except the verses and chorus. Since we play that song live I just asked my Dad to play what he plays on it for those parts. I also played keyboard for the organ parts, although chords are still the only thing I can play on it. I recorded it last July and August, right after I finally figured out how those Hendrix-sounding chords work. That's why I added that last part to the song, we don't do that part live. It me about twenty takes to get those chords right, and they still weren't perfect. Now I could probably get through that part with less difficulty.

I really do feel lucky, I really enjoy jamming and there's no shortage of people to learn from. Especially here in Houston, and Texas as a whole. And I'm lucky my parents like music enough to take me to bars to play until 1 or 2 in the morning. Seriously though, they can see the importance of it when most parents probably don't. Because it's a lot better than sitting around in my bedroom playing guitar by myself all the time, although doing that is probably just as important too.

I liked all three tracks. Very good! It's nice to hear someone do a number and they aren't trying to sound like someone else. Kudos!

Funny... I just noticed that as I was listening to that I am wearing a t-shirt I got down in Austin last June at ROT Rally. Just sayin'... sort of a coincidence. 8)

Very cool man. I'm on a blues kick in a major way right now and that was some really cool, meaningful playing. I feel that you love to play and it shows in your work. Awesome!

TGS!! you are improving in leaps and bounds.

your phrasing has come a long long way!! A lot more dynamic play, you are really using a lot more variety of attack, volume changes, etc. very impressive development. hard to reconcile that with your age, and the fact you have only been playing this style for so short a time. I hear a lot more confidence in your play now too. you would really smoke that girl that wore your hat and played your guitar in 'King of the Blues' last year!! You're really developing your own guitar voice. one of the biggest leaps, which a lot of people can't make is to just sound like yourself.

I am very happy your parents are helping you develop your talents. keep it up, I think the sky is the limit for you.

As always with anything of yours I hear I love it.

I agree with everyone else on your phrasing, it's fantastic the control you have!

Keep them coming and count me as a fan, proud of you too.

Awesome, thanks! :D I still like that hat though. :P

And speaking of the King of the Blues contest, it's that time of year again. I was just in Guitar Center this afternoon and they've already begun sign ups. Although they don't have any of the forms ready yet so I'll have to come back. I'm going to do it again this year, but I think that I'll go to another store this time. Because no one wants to see the same person win twice, and there are still people who are ticked off at me (only a couple, but still). But I'm not going to go into it with any expectations, I'm just going to have fun again. It was a great learning experience last year, and I hope this year is like that too.
