Im after a guitar with a humbucker that gives a real awesome crunch, somewhere in the vicinity of Eddie Van Halen's tone, and trem to allow me to try to learn some of his songs.

What guitar allows you guys to get a heavy crunchy tone like Eddie's, without paying a fortune for a frankenstrat?

A Marshall Plexi and a Variac wouldn't hurt either. Mike

Well, if you want to have the same design humbucker:

Either that or something similar. I'd look at one of the Charvel production models that came out as a starting point, they all have Locking Trems and whatnot.

I use my Wolfgang! 8) piped thru a MXR Microflange and MXR phase 90 compressed by a MXR Dyna for a little boost.

Just go on ebay and pick up a Peavey Wolfgang Standard or Special as they use the same pups and the difference is the Standard is a carved top so it is more money, but either will put you right there. They have been going up steadily but you can get a great Standard for about $1,300 or Special for under a grand. Just make sure it is not an EXP which is the cheaper Special they started producing in Korea in 02 and which I have seen guys who dont know what they are buying pay over 1K for. The giveaway is the serial number starts with a 0 and Eds signature is not branded in the wood, also they have a quilt veneer which makes the attractive.

I'd just give 'Eddie' a call and ask him for one of his guitars.

That is a Korean EXP as you can see the serial number starts with a 0.

Get a multi effects device that has "brown sound" on it. My Line 6 sounds good enough with any pickup. Obviously the better the guitar/pickup the more fun you will have. But don't spend a lot of cash for one sound. You just might want to play other songs.

Multi effects is probably your most cost effective way to go.

Check out Kent Carlevi's sound and lessons:

Yes Dweezil owns the original Rasta guitar that Ed gave him.
