What do you think about Journey's new (well, relatively new) lineup?? Personally, I think that Arnel Pineda (their new singer) is just as good as Steve Perry was and is. All the others sound great just as well! I just listened to their newest CD with Arnel and I'll admit, they still sound great!

By the way, I've heard some rumors about Arnel. That he doesn't like the band or something stupid like that. My question for him is...how can you NOT like being in a WORLDWIDE known band like Journey????? :?:

Anyone got the scoop on that? :o

Also, what's your opinion of the band? Are they still good or great to you today? If not, why?

i have to admit i was never a fan of theirs. they have 1-2 nice songs but mostly i found the singer annoying and it just felt like cheesy music to me. no offense to any fans out there of course. i think maybe it's the generation gap too, i was born in 78 so i never really go into them.

Damn .... Already ?? He just joined... And if in fact that is happening it may not be him... It may be the band also...

I find it weird since it was my belief he was a huge fan before he joined..

But they sound incredible with him.. It's always nice to have that younger voice... They can sing those higher registers easier.. Just take a listen to Geddy Lee these days...

The difference between Rush and Journey:

Rush does not suck ... and that postulate is irrevocably true regardless of which "days" are being referred to. If you want to argue that the three pre-Perry albums were good, I will grudgingly let that slide. But with Perry and afterward, they s-u-c-k. I will concede that even though they hugely suck, Steve Perry was an amazing singer. But a ridiculously talented singer does not automatically infer good music. In this case, it certainly comes nowhere close. And as for Neal Schon ... he is (along with Steve Lukather) is probably the most over-rated rock guitar player probably ever. Both are very competent guitar players, but capable of zero emotional depth with their instrument. And it ends there ... just like driving a VW bug off a 3000 foot cliff.

Saw Journey with Heart and Cheap Trick last summer. Although they're not or weren't one of my favorite bands they did put on a good show. As far as Neal Schon goes again not one of my favorite guitarists but how overated can he be if Santana asked him to play when he was just a teenager. :?

P.S. Nancy Wilson and Heart rocked. She still looks good and can play.

caster360, saw Journey 2 times in '75, in spring at the Riviera, in fall of '76 at the Aragon. Always liked the Santana sound so for me Ansley Dunbar, Neal Schon, Greg Rollie were the best at American rock and roll, no one played with Neal's intensity, Greg's vocals and keyboard work brought the Santana vibe enormously to the music and Ansley, I thought was arguably the best rock drummer at the time, and that is from a person who saw Mitch Mitchel and Ginger Baker live. The crowds at both concerts were on their feet cheering and stomping for the material on those 1st 3 albums. I haven't heard any one cover songs off of them because that combination of talent was so unique they were the only ones capable of playing that music the new line up without Greg and Ansley wouldn't play that material ever again. lastly, they passed the acid test with flying colors (rainbow pun intended), those 3 albums stand up to any thing from that broad genre of music to this day, but when you are bad to the bone and don't try to hide it some pseudo musical types would rather throw the baby out with the bath water than admit to how bad (meaning great) you really are. yea I'm a fan of that original line up I rarely listen but still get goose bumps, those Bros were just too good.

Never was a big Journey fan though I always thought Perry had one of the best voices in rock and in fact became more familiar with them after they were broken up.. Schon is a talented player but also the guy who wanted to oust Santana from his own group and in no way is he that good.lol I am shocked to hear someone say Steve Lukather is an overrated player when in fact I think just the opposite. Maybe you should check and see some of the playing he has done a session player as he has played on about 1,000 of them and we are talking the elite of the elite. Though I will admit in the 80s when maybe he was snorting to much he got lost and was using way to much rack gear and had a very bad tone there for a while. But only the very elite can cut heads with that guy.

I have a "Greatest Hits" album by Journey. Rarely listen to it. To me... it's just ho-hum "could have been written by anybody" light rock. It doesn't make me "feel" anything. :?

Just because someone is a huge fan of a band does not mean that they will automatically get along with all the individual personalities that make up that band. An issue with compensation, for example, is something that no matter how big of a fan of band you may be/may have been, will ALWAYS cause complications because being a fan does not pay the bills...

Uh oh, I sense a good throw down coming on ...

Neal Schon is a reasonably talented songwriter. But as a guitarist, he is at best a "very capable but definitely not great" player. Period. He does not play with any emotion, depth, or significant creativity. He does not have any guitar work that you can point to as being truly great. My problem is that he gets mentioned with some lofty guitar company, and he does not rate it by a long shot. Unlike Buck Dharma from Blue Oyster Cult who is of the same era but has been forgotten -- and Dharma was a monster guitar player and songwriter. Also ... people always love to say "Neal Schon started with Santana when he was only 16." Okay, but that is only a resume bullet. Where is some actual great guitar work you can point to?? If you don't know, I will give you a hint ... Schon's best work was on the forgotten HSAS project with Sammy Hagar which is a pretty good hard-rock album. But when you can't tell if it is Hagar or Schon soloing, that is VERY telling ...

Prepare for shock: Steve Lukather is INCREDIBLY over rated. Lukather is a very capable but often-boring middle-of-the-road player who is thought of as great more for who his friends are and his "large body of session work". Period. Our buddy, "Luke", is commonly mentioned in airs of Eddie Van Halen company. Huh? His soloing is very middle of the road. And Luke (unlike even Neal Schon) can't write a song to save his life. Yes, we all know Luke is one of Eddie's best friends. But somehow that association with Eddie has allowed Eddie's cloud of greatness to exist a bit over Luke ... wrongly, at that. It is INSANE to consider him one of the greats because of Toto, a large body of session work, and who his friends are. Where is some actual great guitar work you can point to? Have you seen him live where he takes his 8-minute guitar solo? It is painfully middle-of-the-raod ... and bor-ing.
