hi all, ive been playing guitar since 1983 and electrics since about 4 years ago. After trying a few models out i really love the feel and sound of Jazzmasters, Telecasters and Mustangs. All 3 are excellent for the alternative type of music i play and love.

Recently tho i saw a guitar on cl that caught my eye, an old Fender Bronco?? Wiki says this guitar went out of production in 1981 and spying youtube i was hoping to see how well it held up to some nirvana type grunge but there were like only 2 videos of it and one was pretty poor quality.

Ive been in a number of music stores and never seen a Bronco guitar before so it seems kinda rare and im curious if anyone here owned or played a Bronco?

And of course would you consider it a surf guitar like the mustang or something else??

Im a little noobish to Fender's history but from what ive read people did not like the the tremelo.

My best buddy had a Bronco for years until he traded it in on a Tele. The Bronco like the Musicmaster was a single pup guitar but where the Musicmaster had a neck pup the Broncos was a bridge pup.It was pretty well a one trick pony as it wasn't really as versatile as the 2 pup Mustang that it was based on.The Bronco did however have a clean sound for leads but was a bit thin and trebley for rythym unless you backed off the tone control. Most guitar books say that the Bronco had a vibrato however I can't recall my buddy's having one although it may well have, there was never an arm attached to it.

So essentially you would put the Bronco in the same category as the musicmaster, which is a beginners guitar then right?

saw a guy on Craigslist selling one with an ugly paint job for 500 and it just didnt seem worth it. Perhaps a nice vintage guitar is worth it but i didnt like what he did with the paint. Someone appeared to airbrush on it.

Still, it does seem rather rare as ive never seen another then the first one.

They are both what were called "student models". The Bronco had a matching amp. They were not bad guitars. I'm not sure if they would fit you needs.

I could get a much better guitar for 500, heck i see some nice Strats like 50s or 60s reissue mims that i would much rather have for the same price.

Perhaps if it had its original paint i would pay 500 for the collectible value but it doesnt so ill keep looking.

I did see a guy with a beat on 66 mustang but he wants 1200 http://worcester.craigslist.org/msg/1656099840.html

That a good price? it certainly looks a little haggard and road worn hehe, but much more my style

Seems steep to me for its condition.
Mustangs were the upper range of the student models.

I got a vintage guitar book it says:
The fender bronco, as it's name suggest ,was a member of the mustang family. Introduced in 1967,it offered players a less-expensive,single pickup version of the mustang.Or from the opposite perspective, ut was the upgraded version of fenders simplest guitar the musicmaster.

Therefore it can be in both familys but should be categorized in the stang family.Whats odd is that ford released a bronco later on.The mustang was also released before the ford one even though it was earlier in the year can you guess a patern?

You dont want a Bronco. Not seriously, it's a bare-bones entry level guitar. Maybe cool from a collector standpoint, but it isn't going to fit your needs as a musician.

Broncos only came in red and as I stated before were basically a one trick pony however a 67 in mint condition with case could be worth as much as $875.A refinished Bronco would be worth about 1/2 that at most with the original case.My Mustang was the victim of a very poor refinish job before I bought it and did my own refinish.

The Bronco came in other colours than red - I've had two - a black one and a white/cream one. I sold the black one years ago and still have the cream one. It does have a vibrato though I'd say not a very good one which is probably why you don't see them with the vibrato arm on them - I don't use mine.

In terms of it being a one trick pony - I guess so, yes - but once you put guitars through a bunch of effects does that really matter? You are then down to playability - and there you have the typical USA Fender feel. It's well made, decent tuners, decent block of wood, nice neck and fingerboard (if you've looked after it - a local luthier takes care of mine) etc. I love the bridge/saddles - where it is positioned and the way it is. Sorry that is hard to explain - but when it comes to things like palm muting - it's lovely, you can't do that on some MIM strats etc because of the saddles. It just seems to be really nice to play.

Welcome, Martin. In The Buddy Holly Story (1978 movie), in the roller rink scene, Buddy (Gary Busey) is seen playing a red Bronco. That definitely was not historically correct as the Fender Bronco didn't come about until later in 1967 as rschreck97 pointed out. Obviously, a fake.
