I would like to give John Mayer a listen, see what all the fuss is about. I see he has a new album out, with mixed reviews so dont want to start off with that one.

What album is the best starting point for John Mayer?

his albumn that got him really big is "continuum", its mostly blues and rock with 1 or 2 acoustic songs.

another good albumn is "heavier things" which has a mix of rock and acoustic also but is just not as popular as continuum.

for acoustic and some soft rock i would try "room for squares".

if you like live stuff try the "were the light is" album.

and to see where he started try his ep "inside wants out" which is alot of acoustic.

hope this helps.

Strangely, I stopped listening to modern music the last 5 years or so and kinda missed out on Mayer until recently. My first exposure to him was a YouTube video-

So you could always start with one song and work your way up too. That's what I did.

not a fan at all but I would say "his old stuff" because anytime I tell a fan of his I don't like his music they tell me to listen to his "old stuff"

IMO, 'Where the Light Is' is his best work to date. He put on a hell of a show that night, and the DVD is great, too. His studio work just doesen't have the right feel for me. Live is where it's at.

Where The Light Is. Definitely. or just go see him live haha. WTLI is alot more blues-oriented than his studio albums. Listening to it now actually.

it's just an opinion, but mayer is a great guitar player. maybe not my style but nonetheless, great. i'd love to have his skills on both electric and acoustic. plus, the women at the shows is a bonus. he is very good.
