I've got an old 'made in the USA' Turbo Rat and love it. It's got a good sound and is extremely versitile. I don't think the DS-1 is awful but I also think there are better pedals out there for just a little bit more money (especially if you look for something used).

if i was to recommend a distortion pedal i would say the tech21 comptortion, if i was after and overdrive i would say buy and ibanez tubescreamer.
