Hi BN: go with this one. For a "Hello Kitty" Telecaster. Obviously. 8)

Thanks everyone for your takes on the pickguards.
I trust when it is finally dyed we can have another look.
( I really like the black Tele Hybrid one...)

Since the weather wasn't working with we I decided to try this in my work shop.

Here is the beginning of the samples of dye.
This is the Peacock Blue.....

Image

Here is the application..Violet..yes that is an old cotton sock.....
Image
Here I wanted to see what the bleed through would look like if I overlapped the dyes with out the sanding in between each application of different colors.
Image
Now I am thinking of using small Acrlic paint style brushes next time to see what kind of effect that will give.

Here is more of the bleed through.
I am not definite on the color combo yet.(which comes first between the blue and violet......)

Image
It looks like crap on the sample board....now...but thats why we practice...lol.
Sorry fior the blurry pics..
More to come soon. -N 8)

hah you had me totally tricked with what you were planning.

I thought you were going to dye the whole piece with the Silver/grey/black, then sand it back, so it would just be in the grain, then dye the whole thing with the peacock blue, and do the edge burst in violet. I bet it would look totally:

Image
The cat's pyjamas.

I have no idea how people get these things on their cat, my cat would tear my face off and claw out my eyes before i ever got any clothing on her.(That cat looks miserable.)

I really like the blend between the peacock and violet, you would just have to work on making a smoother more gradual blend. Do you have access to an airbrush per chance? if you do, you could dye the base colours, and then spray the burst, with a little (and I mean a little, not a lot,) you can get a really nice transition.

I don't know how open to suggestions you are, or if you have something in particular in mind, but if you have scrap to work with, i would try:

1) dye with the silver grey,
2) after it dries, sand back until it's mostly gone from the wood, except for the grain,
3)dye again with the peacock (or the violet-maybe try a little sample of each,)
4) after that's dry, shoot a thin coat or two of clear (it'll make it easier to fix any mistakes in the next step without having to sand all the way back to bare wood,)
5) burst the edges with the other colour,
6) a few more clear coats

Wow, looks like dying isn't an easy thing to do. Sounds like Twelvebars got some tips for you though.

Thanks Twelvebar,(Love the pic) Yes I am VERY open to suggestions and creative critisism on this project. I don't claim to be an expert.... :D ...So I'll take any advice anyone is gracious enough to give.

I was getting frustrated with not being able to do any dyeing, so I wanted to do some indoors. I wasn't able to do any sanding. Theses shots were to get somewhat of an idea of what they will look like on the wood by themselves.

The blending is certainly going to be the fun part.
I am hoping to get some serious work on this this week. The weather I am told shold be favorable.-N 8)

Bro, no pick-guard, your colors chill. Hardware/Pickups, chrome black gold covers ashtrays?

I just checked with my pal "Gino the Butcher", He paints all of my custom guitars.
He will hit the Tele with a glass Poly when all is stained and done.
Twelvebar , your advice is welcome and very helpful.
As is everyone's suggestions.
Thanks !

Howdy BN!

I kind of agree with SBLS, but I rekon that black pickguard will show off enough of the colours you've chosen. I think they look very cool. That purple looks sweet. 8)

I've got a thing for purple guitars and will be making a note of that stain you've got to maybe use on that spare body I used to make the templates with. I can't offer you any advice as I have no experience with stains so I'll wait for you to master it so you can show me how its done! :D

That pic 12bar posted is proper bonkers! I just noticed that Cat has also been forced to wear "Kitty Mittens" !?! How $@!&*% up is that! Randel would tear me off a chunk if i tried anything like that

Nice work Dude!

Andy

Let's get right to it shall we......
Recieved the wire and rewound this D.O.A Seymour Duncan to 14k. HOT..
Image
The neck pup I had lying around from another project....Fender USA, I believe it came out of a Tele Reissue. This is the advantage to doing pro-bono work for friends, you usually get to keep the leftover pieces parts from the jobs.
I also assembled the control panel, pots and swtch and all that fun...
and yes that is an ashtray bridge cover I will be putting on for that "streamlined look".
Image

Here we have some more color swipes....looks like 5hit doesn't it...??These are just swipes to test my blending.....it does get a bit better...
On the actual body I will not be using an orbital sander, thats where those crappy swirls on the wood come from.
Image
So we are still testing sanding and dying techniques between wiring and
such.:::::note; I only used 320 grit, on the finished project we will take it much finer.
Image
Here is more blending. It really is a teadious technique. Kind of like painting with quick-drying water color paints. The grains are like channels for the paint... Only these don't raise the grain as much.
I am almost ready to start sanding down the tele body and begin the real deal. More to come soon. Gotta work to finance the other things!-N 8)
