I got a nice piece of Ash from Guitarfetish for $50. I know it is not the same quality as yours but it would be good for experimenting and getting into the building groove. You can always sell it so you can have more spending money for quality parts.

I have mine in parts still waiting to stain it. I too was thinking sunburst or translucent green like PRS but have no idea how to do it. I have a Stewmac article on it that shows three ways of doing a sunburst but I can't remember and I've been busy doing other things like my taxes.

I hope to get back into it soon. Once I read the article I'll post or send it to you if I still have your e-mail address.

Take care,

Mustangtoo,
I haven't seen you around lately. I hope things are going well for you.
The Guitar fetish body isn't a bad idea. I will check it out.
Here is an article for you to check out.

And you gotta see this video on sunbursting. It is the "template" or catalyst for the sunburst I will be attempting. He uses water based, but the alcohol is pretty similar I am told.

Good luck with the taxes.
Great to hear from you, don't be a stranger!

Thanks BN, great video. That's about what I want to do less the wood quality. So I probably won't use the black on my sunburst. Seems like practice makes perfect.

Hi BN: that's a nice vid - thank you for that.

We are going to want many, many photos when you come to do that stage; you understand that, don't you? :D

Wiping a stain like that is so much more skillful than just spraying it. Good luck! Go to...

Cheers - C

Ceri,
My wife got us a new camera and Im really excited to get the pics up for everyone. No problem there!!

As for the staining...I will be practicing ALOT!!!!!!!!-N :D

Mustangtoo,
The folks over @ finewoodworking.com do some great work.
Cabinets with hidden compartments and all that insane woodworking I would like to learn to do.Keep me posted on your progress.

LOTS of practice for me with the staining!
I have a piece of ash on its way....that kind of sounded dirty didn't it?
When it gets here we will start the practice. I will post pics of that too.
Should be fun! 8) N

What do you think of MiniWax water based stains? They have some nice colors.

I'm looking for a sunburst that hasn't been done before. The stains can be custom mixed.

Thoughts?

Buy 'em an' try 'em I say. Nothing to be lost except a bit of dough, and you could find something really cool. get some scrap to practice on. water based stains take a bit to get used to.

Personally I have never tried them so I can't really say. However I have heard excellent reviews from those who have. Minwax gel stains too.

Part of the reason I am going with an alcohol based stain is because waterbased raises the grain more (like putting water on any bare wood).
You can alco put a prestain conditioner on it to aid in this issue.
Alcohol based does raise the grain but only slightly.
Twelvebar is right on the testing. I'm not nearly the wood artist that Ceri is.
That's why I ordered a an ash plank to test out my idea. I wouldnt want to ruin my beautiful Tele.
I have the link to the place I bought the dyes and sample plank if you want them.

Ooo - I don't deserve much credit. That recent job of mine was a sprayed stain, not wiped.

I'm watching this thread for inspiration. That vid was good: gotta get serious about that technique sometime.

Regarding alchohol v. water: the advantage of alchohol is that it evaporates faster, allowing quicker working. I'm not sure I could comment on the grain raising issue: I'll listen to the opinion of others on that.

The disadvantage of alchohol is also that it evaporates faster. That gives an increased risk of lap marks. If one area of stain dries and then you hit it again the latest ragful of stain goes on top of the previous rather than mixing into it, giving a darker area. Avoiding that is where the skill comes in.

Practice, practice, practice!!! :D

Can't wait!

Cheers - C

That's a great video of creating a sunburst finish!
The playing of the mandolin at the end capped it nicely too!

Ceri is right on the money here. Practice, a lot. There are some big differences when working with alcohol or water based stains. basic techniques are the same, but they have different properties you need to get used to. One thing to be careful about with water based stains, is they can absorb and warp the wood if you are too heavy with them.

follow BN's example get some scrap and practice.

Couldn't you put like a strat pickup in there or maybe a stang or sonic from warmoth? That would give it an interesting sound.
