Again......still waiting for the new neck to get in. So as not to bore everyone too much.
I have been looking around the Cleveland (OH) area for some ash wood pieces to test some of the dyes. Any body have any locally they can steer me towards?
We wouldn't want to destroy our crown jewel Tele body.
That and.....partially because I have never used an denatured alcohol based wood dye before. It doesn't raise and warp as water based dyes do.
Unfortunatey the ONE store that I was going to go to has closed. There was an older luthier who worked there that I liked to visit and grill for knowledge.
This cat was cool as cream.....very good guy. He had helped me on several other builds.
He knew his stuff. What a shame they closed. :x
Soooooo....I have been hitting stores through out looking for ash samples to demo my dyes. I am still looking ...I will find some eventually.

These are two of the major colors I am looking for on this build.
I also recieved sample from the seller. I will show them later.
Maybe we can have a poll as too what sample dyes to use for the accent on the sunburst.

Some supplies I picked up today.

Paint cans for dye mixing, and the denatured alcohol.

Can't forget the gloves. Safety first kids!!!! :P
Being a Chef I also have this obsessive compulsive habit of washing my hands constantly. (In the winter they crack and bleed....it sucks)
Not a bad thing , I am a bit of a germophobe......If I handle something I must wear gloves.
......as not to:
contaminate food; wounds,
or anything else, further dry out my hands, or make an even bigger mess than I will make anyways.

Alchohol dries out skin pretty good and I don't need anymore help.
I have to be able to play with out bleeding.

So that's what I have for now. If anyone has any input/critique is certainly welcome to chime in. I am open to anything.
I will post the developments on my pickups and other hardware soon.

As usual my post is void of any sort of viable input. But I just wanted to say good luck. Very exciting endeavor.

becareful that your gloves don't have any powder on the inside to help them not stick to you, like some latex, or rubber gloves. Its usually a silicon based powder (talc isn't often talc anymore.) Silicon is notorious for impairing paint adherence. i usually try to use nitrile gloves.

i'm a chef too, and the gloves we use at work are not suited to paint work.

Good point Twelvebar,

I was gonna get the nitrile's too. I love those things!!!!
They are very comfortable for prep.
These don't have any powder.
I use a bit o' cornstarch for the gloves and (hotline work if I have to get chaffey...lol)

In Canada. Current job isn't high end at all, but really high volume. I have been there quite a while now.

I shouldn't say I am a chef (though I am the assistant, or sous, I guess.), as I never did my last couple years. oddly I make more money than all but 2 of the guys I know who completed their ticket.

Been contemplating a change o' career though. getting burned out on it.

I feel your pain.
It is a rough gig. long hours, s*** pay, no social life...etc.
A title means nothing.
I went to school, I've been doing this for 17years...since I was 15.
I have met people who went to some of the best schools and can't cut chives for garnish.

If you are good, it shows in your work. Sounds like you know what you are doing. Ironically, I will be in Canada (to see the Falls with the wife.) the 10th.
I have alot of respect for people "in the industry". So stick it out.
You will find a fit, there is a light at the end of the tunnel brother.-N 8)

ah Niagara, other end of the continent than I. But absolutely beautiful.

yeah, I have been at it a little longer than you. I cooked as a job while I was playing out. if you're good they flex around you being away. and usually the other guys didn't mind, as long as i came back with good road stories!

I did the first 2 out of 4 years of school. Then I went through a jazz program. i had a lot of student debt for a while lol.

place i'm at now is huge (over 1000 [not a typo] seats,) we can fill up fast. you work your tail off for sure.

I got a nice piece of Ash from Guitarfetish for $50. I know it is not the same quality as yours but it would be good for experimenting and getting into the building groove. You can always sell it so you can have more spending money for quality parts.

I have mine in parts still waiting to stain it. I too was thinking sunburst or translucent green like PRS but have no idea how to do it. I have a Stewmac article on it that shows three ways of doing a sunburst but I can't remember and I've been busy doing other things like my taxes.

I hope to get back into it soon. Once I read the article I'll post or send it to you if I still have your e-mail address.

Take care,

Mustangtoo,
I haven't seen you around lately. I hope things are going well for you.
The Guitar fetish body isn't a bad idea. I will check it out.
Here is an article for you to check out.

And you gotta see this video on sunbursting. It is the "template" or catalyst for the sunburst I will be attempting. He uses water based, but the alcohol is pretty similar I am told.

Good luck with the taxes.
Great to hear from you, don't be a stranger!

Hi BN: that's a nice vid - thank you for that.

We are going to want many, many photos when you come to do that stage; you understand that, don't you? :D

Wiping a stain like that is so much more skillful than just spraying it. Good luck! Go to...

Cheers - C
