I don't have a Bandmaster VM, but I think that they have their place in music (digital effects that is) :

I don't have one but I like what I hear. I use analog effects mostly but as Mike said, digital has its place. I love the DSP effects on my Acoustasonic 30.

iv wanted to keep my stuff as "real" as possible, like analog pedals and tube driven amps etc. but it seems that more stuff is going digital and a lot of the stuff sounds so good too. i played a cyber twin the other day and it blew me away how cool some of the effects were.

I use an Ibanez DM 1000 digital delay with my JCM 800s and Fender Bassman.I also have a Vox AD120VTH with all digital effects,as far as digital effects go it's the closest to analogue that I've heard the Leslie effect even slows down and speeds up gradually like the authentic one . The Uni Vibe effect is incredibley realistic as are the reverbs -3 types and echo. For a modelling amp it's the closest I've heard in tone to the actual tube amps it's emulating.I guess the tube/analogue realism is due to the tube in the pre amp section and that's what makes the difference. Many digital effects and amps I've tried or heard are thin sounding but the Ibanez even though it's mid 80s vintage and Vox are quite good, dare I say excellent.

I have a VM and the digital effects are credible. I mostly use the reverb and delay but I've tried the chorus. Clean channel is nice but a little sterile. I tend to agree with many reviews I've seen ... the amp lacks some tube warmth, but the pre-amp is solid state. The pre- tubes are used only for pre-amp overdrive and the phase inverter.

I was using the clean channel with just a touch of reverb tonight with a Melody Maker I just got and the sound was crisp. I got a similar sound with my AmStd Tele, so it does well with that.

The amp is relatively new and I haven't really had a chance to try a lot of options yet. I did try just a touch of drive with my SG and it was close to too loud with very low volume for a condo.

So overall, I'm happy with it so far though it doesn't have the deep/warm tube sound of a vintage Band Master or current all-tube model. One person in a review suggested changing the tubes to higher quality GrooveTubes or comparable. He did that and said he got a better sound and more head room.

One thing I may try is using my Grant Fidelity tube pre in the effects loop. I've been doing that for over a year on my Bassman 210/250 and it noticeably warms the sound. This trick works well because the tube GF pre comes after the solid state pre-amp so you don't lose most of the effect as you would in a tube pre-amp between the guitar and the input.

Considering the price of vintage tube amps in this price range, I'd say it's a good deal overall.
