Our bass player has a Peavy Cirrus 5 string bass. Its sounds great when he hits the right notes (lol). Anyway, last Sat night at the gig, theres standing room only, and his bass doesn't make a sound...
On the Cirrus bass, each pickup is run with a 9 volt battery. Now you would think on a $2000 bass they would spend a little time making sure there will be no "weak link". It seems one of the wires for the battery hookups was broken-a little tiny thin wire. All that money in a bass only to be defeated by a battery hookup wire. They should of made the same kind of battery hookup like you see in a smoke detector, where you push the battery into a clip and it locks in place. We soldered things around until it worked good enough for the night, only an hour later. I told him to buy a Fender Precision Bass-the standard of the industry. Forget the batteries and just play.

Hard to talk about across the board quality. I had a Peavey bass amp for many years that went through hell and back, including falling from the tailgate of my truck and 1/2 of a flight of stairs, and never let me down. For about 9 years that thing got hauled all over.

But the Ibanez that I had with active electronics would drain a 9 volt in every 4 hour gig, which I thought was excessive.

I'll stick with my 1984 MIA Peavey Fury.
Its solid. Passive. I love it.
Shame to hear about your friends issue with his Cirrus.
Is it still under warranty?

I get the terminal wires popping off everything no matter who its made by. Boss, Marshall, Vox, Ibanez, Fender.
Its weak by design. Better to break the wire from the terminal than the circuitboard.

The more I see and hear about failures of active basses, make me totally convinced for myself, to stay with a passive bass.

I bought the first Peavey Deuce in the province back in 76 and it's still gigging strong even though I no longer own it.My old 67 Vox Astro IV Bass depends on a 9V battery for bass&treble boost and fuzz and it's never let me down.Peavey amps and PAs are virtually indestructable and their older guitars could have been used for batting practice.

+1 On the Fender P Bass. I have a 1992 which is still going strong. It is a fantastic instrument!!

Well we all know when things are massed produced there are bound to be a few issues. But I would defy anyone to find a better customer service than Peavey runs. I have called up on numerous occasions to ask for old Wolfgang serial numbers or to buy parts and those guys are off the charts with being helpful and friendly even on axes that I have bought second hand. Very classy run operation.

They are are two totally different Basses. You can't even compare the two.

Jeeze, they require batteries to run? You learn something new every day....

....Seriously, why on earth does it need batteries to run?

back up bass guitar, I sat on mine while moving an air conditioner, bad place to put your bass guitar (no pun intended), back up bass guitar definitely.

So they sound better, just ask Clapton.

How old is the bass? If it's less then a year then it might be blamed on quality control but any more then that I'd say it's just normal wear and tear. How do you know the owner wasn't careless when he changed the battery and caused the problem himself?

Hmm, how long do they all last on average?
