How about some suggestions. I sing too much and move around the stage too much to use a regular Wah pedal. What do you think is the best one for my situation?

We play just about everything and I play mostly rhythm so it won't be for screaming leads. Just a few parts and pieces.

We play a lot of 70s and 80s and funk for dancing.

With the Boss ME-25 (new) you can have both + many other effects!

I hear ya mate. The people just starting out these days seem to have
a lot of less expensive, but good tools to hone their sounds.

For the price of that is less than some single boutique pedals alone!!

I remember the first time I saw a ME50. I was using a zoom9030 and a ART SGX at the time. I couldnt believe the little boss floor box. The quality of sound on that compared to the ART in particular was astounding. I could have bought the ART and the Zoom (and probably ten sets of strings) for the price of the ME50. It was around £330 if memory serves me right.
This thing runs on batteries too, 6 AA's. I hate having powerleads onstage, it always seems like a big hazzard to me.

Ah well birthday next month. I can but hope.

I have an old DOD EF 440 from about... '79, I think... a great pedal, though getting rather pricey these days if you can find them. The Mojo Hand Analogue Filter 442 is a popular clone version; every bit as good as the original by all accounts and quite reasonably priced. I'm quite a fan of envelope filters, as long as they don't have a fixed sweep... they can be as expressive as a wah, but they respond to pick attack rather than a treadle. Very rewarding if you are (or would like to be) a dynamic picker/strummer!

I got two DOD EF 440s from two different EBay sellers and neither seem to work (despite them not being sold in "as is" or "for parts" condition). Not sure if there's some exotic trick to using them I haven't mastered or if I happened to have two strokes of bad luck on the same model.

I was looking for the classic funk sound and the DOD would do it (if it worked). But having gotten two dead ones, I might suggest getting a modern replica unless you can try the vintage used before buying.

Wow, Philip, that's a shame... no doubt you've tried everything -- and it's not as if they have many parameters to fiddle with -- but here goes:

Try one on its own with no other pedals so they don't intrude. Make sure your guitar volume is right up, as 440s will not work without the strongest possible signal from your guitar. This can be quite useful, as if you're a fan of "cleaning up" with the volume knob you can also fade out the 440's influence.

Turn both knobs to about 3-4 o'clock and turn the pedal on... strike the strings hard... you should be hearing something vaguely vowel-like occurring with your pick attack. I can't remember what the names of the knobs are (I'm at work where I can't look it up), but the right-hand one changes the threshold at which the filter cuts in... sheesh, that doesn't make sense to me, dunno about you... anyway, if you turn it anti-clockwise you get a more prolonged "w-o-o-o-o-w-w-w-w" if your pedal's working correctly. The knob on the left gives more treble to the initial bite (sorry I'm just describing remembered aural impressions, not physical events), and for me it only seems to have a useful range between 3 and 5 o'clock.

Much depends on your guitar's pickups, any other pedals you may be using and your amp's attributes as well. The 440's responsiveness to these factors is both a blessing and a curse... but if you're not getting any joy from playing hard with those knobs up about three-quarters of the way it sounds like you may have a couple of duds.

Oh... and try running off batteries if you haven't already. I don't have the centre-positive adaptor I need to run mine off a power supply, but there's a chance that yours don't like sharing a supply with regular centre-negative effects if you've been attempting to run them together.

Though I am considering moving to a multi-effects unit some day, right now I have a decent pedalboard with some nice sounding effects so I am mostly looking for a single pedal. My online search has brought me to these candidates. The Mod-Tone Funk Filter, the Electro-Harmonix Micro Q-Tron and Doctor Q, and the Danelectro French Fries Auto-Wah. I would consider other pedals but for now these have drwn my attention. Any opinions on the ones I mentioned?
