We know the usual suspects, Beck, Clapton, Hendrix, Van Halen etc... But What are your thoughts on the phenomenal guitarists that don't SEEM to get the recognition, for example; Stephen Stills, Lindsey Buckingham & Richard Thompson... Who else would you consider an overlooked great guitarist?

I'd list some, but they're out gigging night after night and I'm sure that you wouldn't know the names, but they are GREAT!

true, i was going to list 2-4 of the real unknowns who are spectacular but doubtful their names would even be known by more than 2 people. SO I went with the safe choice on 3 who are vastly underrepresented in the"guitar greats" discussion.

This guy has everyone beat. He is probably the most accomplished rock guitar player of all time: Steve Howe of Yes. The guy can play every stringed instrument ever made, he can play any style of music, he is extremely knowledgeable in all areas of music theory and rhythm signatures, his music catalog spans 40+ years, and he plays beautifully.

Les Dudek comes to mind (Boz Skaggs) and Ric Formosa (Little River Band) and never hear mention of one David John Matthews who I've always felt was quite talented. 8)

i have a whole book of guitar greats.... many of the blues guitarists mentioned are overlooked but theres just to many to name..... also, i think Jerry Cantrell of Alice in Chains, while famous, does not get all the credit he should

Joe Pass. He seems pretty under-appreciated. He was a spectacular jazz guitarist; master of improv.
