Hi Jay: I'm way too late getting to this thread - but here's my thoughts anyway, for the nothing they're worth...

On a recent thread Mr Celtic Cyclonus described Madonna as a "Stringy Old Crow", and I commented that it would make a good name for a band. CC had already come up with a neat name for his own band, so I don't think he'd mind someone taking Stringy Old Crow...

In 1982 there was a film called "Shoot The Moon", and I immediately thought that would make a good band name. Many amusing and, um, less attractive meanings for that phrase are to be found here:

http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.p ... the%20moon

You might or might not like some of those associations, but at any rate multiple meanings are something we sometimes like in a band name. Think of all the opportunities for album artwork (or am I showing my age with that thought? :D ).

In the film "For a Few Dollars More" there is a reprise of the excellently ludicrous chiming pocket watch music, near the end leading up to the final shootout. This time without the improbable cathedral organ... Ennio Morricone named that version of the theme "Carillon". No doubt he meant the word in its musical sense (chiming bells), though again a quick Google reveals multiple associations, which may make it fun as a slightly psychedelic band name. Or not...

Alternatively, track titles you like sometimes make good band names (it worked for the Rolling Stones, after all). You like Led Zeppelin, so what about "Ten Years Gone"? You also like Hendrix and you have certain ideas regarding Spain, so how about "Spanish Castle Magic"? Or, I've just been listening to several hours of Bix Beiderbecke and it strikes me "(Big Jay's) Blue River" would make a good name. Or "(Big Jay's) Riverboat Shuffle". Or "(Big Jay's) Krazy Katz". Or just about half of all Bix Beiderbecke's titles.

There. If your colleagues can't find a name they like amongst that lot... fire 'em!

Cheers - C

Hey gang! Well, I just formed a new band. We are going to play blues, hard-driving, down on your luck, cheap whiskey blues....real vintage-like with anger and attitude. We are also planning on sprinkling in some soul and maybe a little funk ( just to keep the ladies interested. )
Hey Big Jay  ....How about: C.O.A .....with no need to explain further. 8)

How do you like The Dead Horse Blues Band?

Kick it around with your mates.I like "Dead Horse" without the descriptor. Has the same feel as Harrison's "Dark Horse". Then, as with Led Zeppelin, you'll have a tale to tell. That of the original idea for a name being considered a dead horse. Of course, there's other creative ideas like
"Dog Won't Hunt" if you go for wordy. Or "Horse Won't Run". I'd would have suggested 'Authenticity" as an out-take of COA but my cousin's band carries that name presently.

Regarding dead cats and the way they bounce, Im reminded of another industry slang phrase to describe a stock that's appreciating quickly.

That's it, that's the one. I'm ready to buy every album Scalded Dog puts out. A band with that name can't fail.

...'Course, now you're going to tell me a band in Timbuktu has already taken that name...

Cheers - C
