I hate it. Not the gig itself, just the feeling all day that your waiting for something to happen, aimlessly floating around the house. Checked the guitars, checked the amps, leads, pedals, mic's, stagewear and its only 9:40 am. Load in isnt until 6:30pm. As a rule I cant play today to pass time.
All thats left is to cook the pre gig meal of a hot as hell curry, then wait and wait.

What do you do to get through?

don't we all do the same thing, just use different words to describe the emotions of the writing moment?

"I hate it".- oh boy this is the mother and father (the flip side would be, same parents different emotion) of all ideas, you love the thing because you are good at it, "waiting for something to happen" reminds me of the old Kingsman song "waiting", "for something to happen", being there is it, "aimlessly floating around the house" or doing your taxes or cooking or name it, between gigs, is, well, break a leg tonight Niki, wish I could be there!

Yeah ok hate it is too strong a term. It's more like feeling in a state of limbo and expectation. Trying to occupy myself to make the time pass quicker.

You "try" and relax if everything is set to go. Not as easy as it seems sometimes though.

Go for a walk, listen to music, noodle on an acoustic, read a book....

Yeah, I know, easier said than done.

Sometimes I'll watch a music DVD to help inspire my to improve my performances. I watch some of the Crossroads, Peter Gabriel, or anything new that I have. It helps raise my emotional investment in that nights performance. I've been doing this a long time as well. CUrry sounds great!

Why do you have this pre-gig rule?

I never play on the day of a gig either.

I know what you mean Niki, I get very excited and just want it to happen there and then. After you've checked everything a thousand times there isn't much to do but wait. Why don't you watch a good movie or get at the PlayStation or something?

Best of luck anyways boss, wish I could be there!

Thats just it mate, nerves disappeared years ago. Now I'm just hanging around with a thousand what if's running around my subconscious so I cant concentrate on anything too well. All I wanna do is get out and enjoy myself.

Yoda
OCD me has rules and regulations for everything. The gig rules are

1 No playing
2 Drink the night before, so's not to be tempted on the day or during.
3 Chicken Vindaloo or a fry up before I leave the house.
4 special boots must be worn
5 be fifteen minutes early for load in
6 Doner Kebab on the way home.

Think thats bad you ought to see me check the house before going away for a few days. I've been known to get 5 miles out of town and swing the car round to have a recheck of the front door.

It's like any other effort or event, mate. Depends how 'prepped' you feel. I can't ever recall sharing your emotions because we were always 'dimed', having worked so closely together for so many years, during high school and after. Even now, when we get together just to jam, these four or five old birds, though a bit feathered, still seem to have that intrinsic 'feel' for what's next. When I was doing "The Cafe WHA? in The Village, Fridays and Saturdays all those years ago, man it was just like going to work. That was nearly a 20 month run, and we used to work out new material on Sundays, and do initial run throughs in the first set on Friday because the house was usually dead by then. Best example of that concerns having been on stage with my drummer at the wedding of his daughter 10 years ago. We spoke about performing in a brief conversation a couple of weeks before and I called the leader an told him what to expect...."Roll Over Beethoven!" Ken gets on the traps and we are into it. I have it on video tape...no rehearsals....with a group of musicians we've just met. It was like 'frack'in' magic......and at least 35 years since the two of us had perfomed together. 8) That.....is how you get through.
I'll been thinking of you, and how lucky you are to be out there.
Doc

I know the mixed feeling of eagerness/trepidation that comes before a gig but I always found picking up the guitar and running through the set list on my own helped me prepare for a gig.I guess we all have our own ways of preparation, anyway best of luck with the gig-go out and impress the heck out of 'em.

After you've checked and rechecked every component of your rig and played through it not much else to do but make sure you have backup batteries(if you use them), extra strings, plectrums, tape, and assorted tools, just relax and wait!!! Hard to do I know.
Well, good luck my old friend and knock their socks off!!! 8)

Full report expected tomorrow!!!!

I do this ALL the time! I have left work (when I used to have a job where I close up at 12:30am) drive home, get into bed, only to get out and drive back to work to make sure the door is locked....and it always is. I do it at home too!
