Hi all, so i spots this guy demoing a white custom model fender hot rod deluxe that's sportin' a celestion g12 century vintage 12" speaker, instead of the stock eminence 12" found in the regulation hot rod deluxe. He sez, it sounds better, whatever better constitutes. So now i'm hoping someone on here knows something about these speakers, and if they truly are the holy grail of speakers, that i must have in order to have maximum mojo, and so the planets shall remain in proper alignment, can they be swapped out without need of any changes in the amps electronics? Or perhaps the amps power cord would need lengthening? Thanks for any advice!

How many Watts is the speaker rated for?I've always heard people swearing by the Vintage 30s,I have one in an old Traynor Guitar Mate and that sounds great,it would take quite a speaker to replace it.

Vintage 30's are my speaker of choice. Alnico schmicko when it comes to speakers. Give me good punchy ceramic any day of the week.

Incidently vintage 30's are not named so after their power rating. Their 60 watts not 30. I believe the 30 designation comes from the speaker diameter in centimeters.

Gotta love that mid punch from V30's that makes your amp seem twice as loud.

V30's do in fact have great mid-range punch but I also like the AlNiCo Golds

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

In my Marshall 4X12 1960-TV cab, I have alnico Weber Blue Dogs and Silver Bells in an X-pattern; in the Mojo 2X12Bluesbreaker cab, a Celestion Alnico Gold and a Scumbag 12H-75; in the Bogner 4X12 UberKab, it's Celestion V30s and 12-75s in an X-pattern.

They each sound different but wonderful...lots of clarity, airiness, and sweetness, even when playing dirty. It is something that you have to try on your own. When I bought each of the cabs, I had done research on the various speakers, but it is only through listening to various cabs and speaker combinations that will determine your selections; even those vary greatly depending on the guitar and amp used.

Wattage wasn't mentioned guitslinger, but i reckon per nikininja's advice, a 60 watt speaker should handle my 40 watt rated Hot rod deluxe eh?! i guess my next question is, where can i look at these speakers? Thanks guys!

Hi Dave,I don't know where you live but here in Canada you can usually get them at Long&McQuade elsewhere just about anyone who stocks Marshalls should have them as they are usually the speakers used in their amps and cabs.

Standard Marshall cabs and combo's usually have Celestion G12-75's in em. Not a dissimilar speaker at all, a little too aggressive in the treble region to my ear.

I think the bluesbreaker and 18HW have Greenbacks, and you can buy 1960 cabs with either Greenbacks or Vintage30's in em. The standard is the G12-75 though, a brilliant metal/70's rock speaker.

The Celestion site has plenty of info on their speakers.
Celestion

In general terms, I would not put a Celestion in a Fender amp. Celestions are connected to the Marshall/Vox sound, which is nothing like the sound of a Fender.

I think you are better off with the original Eminence speaker. If you are looking for some kind of a change, Jensen and JBL are two speaker manufacturers associated with the Fender sound. Weber makes a few speakers that are close to JBL clones.

My JCM 800 1960 cab is fitted with Celestion G 12 L 25s and they sound great when driven by my 50W 2204.My 50 W 4210 has a G-12 T 75 and for a single 12 it certainly moves a lot of air and sounds great too.I wouldn't worry too much about putting a Celestion in a Fender amp.Having said that though when I saw that the Blues Jr. had an Eminence I had my doubts because I was never a fan of their speakers but I found that the one in the Blues Jr. was the best Eminence I've heard yet.If you go for the Celestion and it greatly improves your sound please let me know and I might decide to switch too.
