I have a pretty strong stomach for almost anything, but Vicoden gets me really nauseated. Any time a doc wants to prescribe it to me (which is - thankfully - very seldom), I tell them, "Don't bother ..."

I don't envy you. I have to have my wisdom teeth removed the same way. All four of them. :(

You are doing it the right way. Over and done rather than having to repeat the process.
Hang in there,

[/quote]The issue has nothing to do with your stomach. It has to do with the opiate receptors in your brain. Nausea is a side-effect of onset in many patients and can often be mitigated by avoiding what I call 'up and down' syndrome. Opiate pain meds should be prescribed not on a 'needs' basis, but for a specificed period of time so as to reach 'steady state' blood level, and then discontinued. Not all opiates elicit the same response. An individual having an idiosyncratic response to Vicodin (hydrocodone + acetominophen) might tolerate Percodan (oxycodone+acetominophen) well. Bear in mind that, unless you have a working knowledge of pharmacology, you should take care about prescribing for yourselves. There are situations in which drugs in the Motrin family should not be taken, in that they affect blood clotting. Tylenol(acetominophen) in excess is liver toxic. A clinician well versed in the use of analgesics should have an armamentarium varied enough to be able to tailor it to the needs of a particular situation.
As an aside to Jeff's posting. The doctor treating him should have been prepared to deal with any and all aspects of the procedure anticipated. All exodontia, particularly third molar surgery, carries with it a host of potential complications which well trained oral/maxillofacial surgeons are trained to anticipate from the get go. Best wishes to Jeff and the hope that he heals quickly, well, with no residuals.
Doc

I went and had a molar pulled from my lower jaw last week. Well after it was pulled, it seemed that there was a piece of bone sticking out which was hitting the underside of my tounge every time I tried to eat, drink, or even sing with my band. So I went back to my Dentist on Monday to see if he could do anything about it, and he told me that he wasn't equipped to deal with something like that so he reccommended me to a local Oral Surgeon. I went in yesterday and had the surgery done. They put me under and they removed the bone spur, and when I woke up, they gave me a prescription for Vicoden, which after I took a couple, I decided wasn't for me and decided to take Ibruprofen instead, which works much better. I'm taking the rest of the week off and am going to relax and play some guitar which sounds like a good way to get better!

Phobia number #6(for me of course): Dentist's/Oral surgeons.

Wow, best wishes. The worst that I had was all four wisdom teeth removed at once when I was about 18. I remember waking up and getting to the car and then getting home and having to be just about carried into the house by my dad and sister which is no easy task considering it was 210 lbs of dead weight. Out of the next two days all I remember is my dad trying to change the gauze the odd time for me and me being awake barely long enough to swish some salt water around. I hope that your recovery is a quick one!

Ibuprofen better then Vicodin  I have had a few molars removed, two by a bullet in the jaw. I took me some pain pills for a while after all that surgery.

Oh my, jeffo you stir up memories of my previous dentist. He was a great guy, very good dentist and a cool musician (pianist). He always listened to jazz music in his office and the last time he had to remove one of my tooth, Frank Sinatra was singing on the radio "I did it my way" while my dentist was prying off my tooth and singing along. It was surreal let me tell you.

I wish you a speedy recovery Jeffo. Good luck. :)

Hey CV...you're a pretty lucky guy. Last GSW to the face I remember vividly seeing when I was a resident, was administered by a shotgun. A pretty interesting jigsaw puzzle to re-assemble.

You must have missed the short bio I wrote awhile back in answer to that
question. ZZDoc was the handle a patient of mine dropped on me when he found out I was really a bluesman. 8) That's at least 15 years ago, or more.
