+1000 -- I love Meat Loaf. Check out his singing on a number of tracks when he was an unknown artist on Ted Nugent's "Free For All" (pre-Bat Out Of Hell). Great stuff.

Yeah, I've seen Yngwie play "blues".

Dump-d-dump-d-dump-d-dump ... *insert 2,000,000 notes here and repeat*

Seriously though, I think that a lot of these rock star guys just say things like that to pour gasoline over the fire. Yngwie knows that most blues fans aren't fans of his, and making comments like that is a good way to stir them up. Free publicity.

On the other hand, maybe he's just stupid.

yeah i'm pretty sure I've seen vids of malmsteen playing purple haze before as well... maybe he just imagined the whole thing without listening to it and it miraculously turned into the same song.....

Having said that there are some cool bluesy bits in malmsteens playing - i've always liked the really funky bluesy bit at the end of the solo for deja vu

It must be all the crack he smokes or something.

Anyone remember the 'Thats it, you've unleashed the fury' incident to some airline hostess a few years back.

Cheers for the tip mate. The Loaf and The Nuge, that sounds too good to be true, I'll take a look for it now.

A buddy of mine was telling me today that he was on the Gibson Forum and there was a link to an interview of Malmsteen and in it he says he's never listened to Hendrix because he's all noise. He also stated that he too could play blues and demonstrated by just slowing down one of his 20 note a second riffs-a real joke.I always knew that he had a monumental ego but to discredit the most innovative guitarist the rock world has seen and probably will see is just too much even for him.I'll email my buddy and see if I can get the link.Jimi had talent and soul that was even greater than Malmsteens ego.Malmsteen plays with less soul and emotion than a computer, that's why he can't play blues worth a pinch of rat excrement.

checked out that interview excerpt and maybe Malmsteen made a mistake you know forgot his manners or something like that, I heard his guitar work back in the '80s music video's on MTV one were he slid his guitar across the stage, I don't have any of his recordings because his sound is pretty generic shredder, I don't think he has ever charted, not the top 40 anyway, I saw Jimi live and I'm fairly certain Malmsteen is so far behind him musically, and, Jimi is dead, that it will not ever matter what the guy has to say, just 1 hit Malm's baby if you can do that just once it will greatly improve your cred. What am I talkin' about I don't have any charted songs either, right?

Thanks guitslinger, it was cool to think about nothing important for a few minutes, and no offense to Malmsteen.

I could accept a 'forgot my manners' excuse if it were anyone relevant, talking about a run of the mill guitarist.
Theres a few simple facts to remember here.

1 Hendrix is probably the most influential guitarist ever. Like him or dislike him (I'm very 50/50 about his releases), your either influenced by him or by somebody that was influenced by him. All you have to do is listen to the bands around 66 then listen to the same bands around 68, to hear his influence. Clapton in particular changed a good deal after hearing him. Compare Fresh Cream to Disreali Gears. Townsend makes no bones about Hendrix's influence on his playing. Theres a myriad of similar stories.

2 Malmsteen had limited success in the 80's, despite his obvious prowess. He's constantly played a self promotion game, feeling the need to make bold brash statements about himself. Even during his hey day. Now he's getting old and fat and his records aren't selling like they used to, he's decided to make a nonsense statement (He's totaly influenced by Richie Blackmore, who admits to being influenced by Hendrix) to get people in the guitar world talking about him. He must have been taking PR tips from John Mayer or something.

Best thing we could all do is ignore the idiot and let him dwindle away into obscurity.

wtcumm00, thanks for posting this vid Bro, it was a comparison I always wanted to hear, Vai's guitar and a Strat, man what a difference, Vai should chuck that toy he plays and just play Strat's his guitar virtuosity is wasted on that guitar he's playing 8)

I thought the Satchmo put the pair of em in their places. Yngwie's guitar sound was just weak on these laptop speakers. Notice how the guy who dont listen to Hendrix managed to copy all of Hendrix's mannerisms

And the upside down headstock must have been an accident too. What a tool.
