I traded a Vox amp for a Godin Radiator Guitar yesterday with a former bandmate. The problem is that the Guitar was filthy and it stinks of cigarettes. After spending a long time cleaning it, the smell of smoke hasn't gone away and every time i pick it up i feel i have to wash my hands to get the stinking smell of smoke off them. Is there anything out there i can use to get rid of this smell without damaging the Guitar?

Important safety tip. You don't want to end up like this poor guy:

Tip: Change the strings. The smoke covers them too. :)

The strings were the first to go. The were coated in so much crap that they barely rung out.

You may end up having to remove the pickguard because smoke has no doubt permeated the control cavity. Also be sure to pay special attention to the fret board if it's rosewood because of it's porous nature it acts like a sponge and soaks up the smokey smell.

The fingerboard is maple and the entire front of the guitar is the pickguard. Here is a picture of a Godin Radiator.

As you can see, it's quite an unusual guitar.[/img]

My advice , but only if you feel comfortable doing it, is to disassemble, and wipe it down with naptha. let air out over night, and repeat again. Clean the hell out of it. This may even entail cleaning the bridge and tuners.

Find a place you can lay out the parts to air out. In scenarios like this, the case is your enemy, if it came with a case you may need to clean it too.

i got a used guitar around a year ago, it reeked. Even my friends who smoked said it was overpowering, so you know it was bad. i couldn't clean the gig bag it had, so i discarded it. I did a full strip down, and wipe down, and then left it in my spare room with the window open, forgot about it for a couple days (really high 2nd floor, with no balcony so no fear of burglary,) and there was only a faint trace smell left, which dissipated over time.

+1

After a strip down and a clean, Time is the major factor here. It will need a good couple of weeks to soak up your own smells. I've got a couple of Godins (Exit 22 & XTSA) and they rock! Once the smell has gone you've got a bloody good guitar there!

Enjoy

Andy

If only it were stained with bonfire smoke instead of cigarettes. That would be awesome.

Snap!

Godin Build quality is supurb and I've heard lots of good things about those single coils that are in there, but I'm saving up for a Fender (loyality points at stake here!) so it will have to wait.
