My number-one restaurant pet peeve is when the waiter crouches and rests his arms on the table. I find this behavior vulgar in the extreme. :?

I absolutely hate this. the idea is that the waiter get to eye level or lower with the seated customer, and somehow seem less 'intimidating'. I wonder who they think might be intimidated by a waiter in a casual dining restaurant.

Actually I think there is some merit, standing I am indifferent to them.squatting I want to punch them in the face,

To me, "Hi guys" is just an all encompasing term. I am a delivery person and frequentlly ask "How are you guys today?" for men, women and everyone. I've not met anyone so uptight that this offended them. On the contrary, I get more "negative" feedback when I say "mame or ladies". "I'm not a mame yet" is usually what I get. People need to loosen up a bit all the way around don't you think? Maybe its just me.

In principle I disapprove of anyone calling a woman or a group of men / women "guy(s)". It is lazy communication (in my humble opinion).

If I know gender specifics when addressing individuals, I try to adhere to proper noun/pronoun usage. However, when I was taught grammar, it was not during a time of being “politically correct”. It was taught that when unsure what gender to use in a sentence, use masculine verbage. So for anyone I may have accidently called "dude", "hey guys", or "he" and I was not correct, I apologize. So for now on I will use “dude/dudette”, “hey guys and gals”, and “he/she” when not sure of gender for y’all.

And just to clear the air about the term “y’all”. It is U.S. southern slang for you all. “Y’all” is meant to be used when addressing a group of people. It is plural. The term “Y’alls” is just wrong.

You guys and gals have a good night. Thank you for addressing this issue.

not being snarky, people who are too lazy to think of and then say the appropriate greeting or some one so young and inexperienced they don't know what is the appropriate way to greet people.

When I enter a room with mixed genders I simply say "Hello Folks." or something light-hearted like "Good Day Fine People."That way It's not gender specific and nobody gets offended unless being called people or folks is an issue for them.

Okay, I'm entering the discussion...y'all.

Standard English recognizes only one second-person personal pronoun: you. In modern usage, this pronoun is used for both the second person singular and second person plural.

Most languages have at least two personal pronouns for the second person. In many cases, there are three, as in German:

:!: Second person singular (informal): du
:!: Second person singular (formal): Sie
:!: Second person plural: ihr

Early English was heavily influenced by Germanic pronoun forms. By Shakespeare's time these had normalized as:

:!: Second person singular (informal): thou
:!: Second person singular (formal) or second person plural: you

Thou retained its Germanic declensions: thee (object) and thy (possessive). Thou also required Germanic verb conjugation (thou hast--compare to the German du hast). Ease of use (lack of both declension and conjugation) may be part of the reason that you became more commonly used [my conjecture only]. But for whatever reason, thou eventually fell out of favor, leaving only you to carry the weight for the second person singular and plural.

Note that we have lost the formal you (Sie-form) altogether. I say good riddance to it--English has become a more egalitarian tongue without the forced formality that plagues so many languages.

Naturally, having only one pronoun for both singular and plural often creates confusion because it is not always clear whether you refers to only one person or to more than one. Many attempts have been made to clarify the situation. In the Southern US, we have settled on the convention of y'all. Personally I find this far more elegant than any of the other American attempts at synthesizing a second-person plural personal pronoun (e.g. y'uns, youse guys, etc.). With all respect to my Northern neighbors, these all sound coarse to my ears.

I contend that y'all very neatly takes the place of of the old plural you, freeing up the modern you to concentrate on its role as the modern version of the singular thou.

Please note: y'all is always plural. Always, always, always. You will occasionally hear people insist otherwise, but that is simply not how it's used. Those who say otherwise are yankee interlopers. :P

There is, however, another "super-plural" form: all y'all. This is used when addressing multiple groups or when emphasizing the totality of a very large group.

Example: I need y'all (Group A) over here and y'all (Group B) over there, and at the end I want all y'all (Groups A & B) to come down here.

I hope I didn't bore y'all too much with this. To my fellow Texans and other Southerners, I know y'all get it. I just wanted all y'all to understand the proper use of this invaluable word. 8)

Yes, y'all is a contracted form of you all. I can't believe I forgot that in my embarrassingly long post on the subject.

Maybe we should approach a mixed group of people and say, "How are all you gals?"
