I know this isn't guitar related but people are always posting non guitar subjects here anyway so there's no harm in that.Anyway something I have noticed in the past few years, especially in restuarants is that more often than not the server will greet you with "How are you guys today?" or "Are you guys ready to order yet?" Even when it's a party of men and women. One evening I took my wife and daughters to dinner and was greeted with the "you guys" routine.I always thought that "guys" denoted the male gender but it seems that recently it has taken on an entirely different connotation. When did all this come about?I didn't receive the notice lol.

This controversy could be avoided if everyone simply said "y'all".

Down here- its the same. Its been happening for decades.

Or perhaps, you would be greeted with a "G'day mate" instead

Its the same as the term 'mankind'. It's all inclusive.

If I were meeting male and female friends in the pub and walked in an addressed and greeted each sex separately it would be deemed more sexist than just saying 'hi guys' for everyone.

The use of "guys" frosts my parents. My dad (he's 84) really appreciated (NOT) the time he and my mom went to a nationwide chain place and were greeted with "howzit goin' dudes."

We're all wondering when this informality came in. As they see it, they don't talk to friends of 40 years with the casual familiarity that servers and store clerks use these days.

Then there was the time my GF and I went to a restaurant and the server (female) sat down beside me and started in talking as if she knew me. That brought a few nasty looks until she noticed that all the servers in the place were doing the same thing.

No idea when it started ... or why ... but the sooner this practice goes away, the better. There's such a thing as being friendly instead of stiff and formal and yet not acting like you're best friends with the person.

I thought this thread would be about Lady Gaga
Usually, "you guys" seems to be said more in the northern states along with "All set?" when recieving food. Down south its usually "yall" I think no disrespect intended, though of all times to be "politically correct"(and since your tip may be dependant upon it) one would think that the waitor/waitress would want to be a little more gender specific. I have noticed this trend too....It seems as though terms of respect have gone out the window. Im not citing any specific age group, because its across the board. People used to actually sit down and talk(business or otherwise) but now, that has been replaced with loads of emails/facebook/text etc. this has taken the personability out of many relationships....sorry for eating up bandwidth with seemingly endless drivol..but you know me, Im a blabbermouth

" Hi Ladies " is always a bit more respectful. It acknowledges there`s a woman ( or women ) present and they don`t feel as if their being categorized as part of the men that their with.

+1000. I could do a long explanation as to why I believe y'all should be considered a legitimate pronoun, but I'll spare y'all my linguistic geekery this time. 8)

Hearing a waiter call women "guys" is my number-two restaurant pet peeve. My number-one restaurant pet peeve is when the waiter crouches and rests his arms on the table. I find this behavior vulgar in the extreme. :?

Oddly enough, these two often go together.

I've heard girls call each other "dude" and "man", so this does not surprise me...I just cannot remember when I first started hearing this...

Or as they say where I'm originally from, "Hah yuz duin?" Or, "Ah yuz ready t'ordah?" With the word, "yuz", it may be pronounced a soft or hard 'u' depending on which of the 5 boroughs you are from.

Thats because they have not been taught correctly. The server should say "Hello' How may I help you?" or "Hello My name is ------- are you ready to order or do you need more time?"

Poor work ethics you will not walk into a higher end restaurant and have service staff say Hi' guys. Now some places like to try to bring the care free atmosphere with peanut shells on the floor and the bubbly greetings but they should still show respect to the customer.

I couldn't have said it better myself. Things like manners and the way to properly address people are no longer taught by most parents. Have you noticed how other people eat in restaurants? It's sad. We went from the 40's and 50's where men and women looked like a million bucks when they wee just sitting around the house to the Lulu Lemon and track pants brigade. It is simply a lack of respect that flows throughout the world now. The more that I hear people talking the more it makes me wonder how we are supposed to be evolving with technology yet turning back into cavemen with our personal dealings.

I think if I said 'y'all' in a Glasgow accent to people with Belfast accents I would get killed quite frankly. Wouldn't work with the way we talk over here!

lol
