saw the big 3 that were trying for the Guinness book in '74 Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Uriah Heep and yes they were loud, flash to '88 at Allstate Arena AC/DC the cannons knocked everyone off of their chairs, flash to '90 Popular Creek The Cult and Metallica were so loud we were 9 or 10 rows back front and center and went to the back stage area after 2 songs from The Cult, just too loud, they win the loud contest.

Black Label society Lincoln theater Raleigh NC a few years ago… A tiny venue that only holds 200 people.. Small enough to be amped with a 30 watt combo…. No instead they used 8 Marshall full stacks dimed to 11… I have significant hearing loss to this day, but the ringing did not stop for 3 days after the show. WOW

Cheers
Bill

Ted Nugent, Cow Palace in San Francisco around 76-77. Worked hard to get close to the stage and at the end of his show, before the encore, Ted took off his guitar, slapped the strings, dimed the volume, propped the guitar up against his stacks, and left the stage. The feedback grew into the loudest, most ear piercing white noise you could imagine. It was just painful and went on for way too long. I remember thinking "What an a**h@le, why are you doing this to me!" I never listened to Ted again.

The loudest I've been to was Motorhead on the 'Everything louder than everthing else' tour.

The top slots measured db's actualy go to

1 KISS achieved a SPL of 136 dB measured by City of Ottawa Bylaw officers at the sound tent during their live performance.

2 My Bloody Valentine (132 decibels)

3 Motorhead (132 decibels, although there are claims to be over 140 decibels)

4 AC/DC (130db)

5 The heavy metal band Manowar is one claimant of the title of "loudest band in the world",[4] citing a measurement of 129.5 dB in 1994 in Hanover. However, Guinness Book of World Records listed Manowar as the record holder for the loudest musical performance for an earlier performance in 1984. Guinness does not recognize Manowar's later claim, because it no longer includes a category of loudest band, reportedly because it does not want to encourage hearing damage. Manowar achieved a SPL of 139 dB during the sound check (not the actual performance) at the Magic Circle Fest in 2008.

For me it was Poison and Tesla at the Providence Civic center in the winter 0f 1989. I had a hard time hearing anything for a couple of days after that show. It didn't help that I was a couple of rows from the stage either!

I saw both bands here on Cleveland that same year.......creepy. 8)

Tesla was incredibly loud, it was my Very first concert. I was a young little bastardn then...lol-N

**Edited (Niki gave some specs.....)I thought the Who held the record for a while for the loudest band in the land, at one time too.

They did with a remarkable 126db in the 70's. When you look at all those other bands sonic acheivements they happened in the 80's, 90's and 00's where PA technology had moved on considerably. It's quite a feat. PA's were really still in their infancy in the early 70's atleast. In 67 Charlie Watkins designed the first 1000watt PA, which was used by Fleetwood Mac at the Windsor jazz and blues festival.

Charlie Watkins didnt get to enjoy his PA's first performance, he was arrested for disturbing the peace because of the volume of the gig.

Went to see Blues Traveler at least 12 years ago at small venue of Dartmouth College, the bass was so loud, you could feel it compress your chest. The bass player was trying to smoke in front of his stacks that were pushing so much air it blew his cigarette out. Also that amplified harmonica was like a buzz saw to the brain. We had to leave early, my wife was physically getting ill from the sound levels.
2nd vote goes to Ted Nugent - that one really hurt as well.

I'm not sure it really was the loudest, but my first KISS concert sure seemed that way. It was my first indoor "concert" of a major act.

After having been a fan for 5 years and listening to all the albums, I was just not prepared for the loudness level of the live show. It was '83 in LaCrosse WI for the Creatures Tour. Eric's drums were mounted on a tank turret and when that thing "fired" I thought my bowels had imploded.

What a great time that was :)

Motorhead was probably the loudest.

Rolling Stones Concert (two different concerts) at the Oakland Colosseum. I left with my ears ringing.....and I was worried about that.

AC/DC all the way- would have to be the loudest ive been to. A friend of mine who didnt go- could hear it 10km away, and another friend who lives nearby me said he could make out Brian's voice- and he lives 5km from the stadium!

This was my view- this shot was taken while they belted out 'Let There Be Rock' and Angus was tearing up the lengthy solo on the end of the catwalk.

5/2/2010 @ Western Springs Stadium, Auckland.
