I would have to say Big Sugar at a Stampede bar. Didn't even hear the fireworks later that night.

Back in the 70s the Who was recognized as the loudest rock band on earth making into the Guinees Book several times and reaching well over 140 dbs. which is the level a jet creates on takeoff. Our drummer attended a concert at our Arts and Culture center where Tom Cochrane and Red Ryder played and said it was the loudest thing he ever heard actually reaching the pain threshold.

I have been to countless shows, big and small. But -- easily -- the loudest show I ever went to was Robin Trower in a small club in the late '80s. He played on a stage that was about four feet high, with us standing right at the stage, right in front of him ... AND all of his amps. I have experienced ringing before, but this was wayyyyyy beyond that. My buddy and I could not communicate after the show. That had never happened before ... we could not talk about what we just saw becasue we could not hear each other talk. After the show in the car, I turned the radio on, turned it all the way up, and could not hear it. The next morning, a room mate handed me the phone ... I could not hear any body talking on it. Now, that was scary loud ...

My loudest concert I have been to has been Metallica's ...And Justice For All. My ears have had a high pitched ring in them ever since.

For overall loud, probably Blue Cheer back in 68. They were reputed to be the loudest ever up to that point and they lived up to their reputation.

For head piercing loud, the 1975-ish incarnation of Blood, Sweat & Tears. I had seats two rows back from the audio towers and painful doesn't begin to describe it. I was deaf by the end of the first set. It was as much the shrill horns at that volume as anything else. Hearing didn't come back for a couple of days after that one.

Or Kim Mitchell.

I saw Metallica in 1996 and it was so loud that my hearing and balance were messed up for about a week afterwards.

Hard to believe this, but I saw a Gregg Allman show at a warehouse type venue in Nashville around 1995,and was right in front of the PA stacks...I had shockwaves going through my body and although I had ear problems before, they rang 10x as loud for the next 3 days.
I didn't expect to get hammered that hard there with him.

Dude! That a bloody good start! Pearl Jam Rock! I saw them at the O2 Arena last year and they were amazing, Eddie sounded just like he does on the albums! They played for almost 3 hours! Money worth right there!

Loudest for me was Cypress Hill at the Brixton Academy, London. They had a new album out at the time with had been subject to some very negative reviews (mainly cos it was crap!), so they took their frustation out on the crowd. By far the loudest and angry-est gig i've been to. The bass was so loud that It took over your breathing and battered your internal orgains to the point where people were throwing up and leaving the gig!

Enjoy!

Andy
