It was 26 yrs ago that Lenny Breau was found murdered in his swimming pool.Today on CBC-FM they did a retrospective on his life with his son Chet -yes he's named after"that" Chet-and they played a lot of his music. I must admit that I hadn't heard a lot of his music other than what Randy Bachman(who Lenny taught)plays on his program and the occassional jazz program but he was incredible. They played a recording of Lenny having a lark imitating a car radio going quickly from station to station,he'd change style and tempo of a song randomly in mid phrase just as you would if changing stations going from rock to folk to country to flamenco to classical to jazz etc. it was a riot but it was also a testament to his incredible skill and musicianship.Chet Atkins said (while Lenny was alive) that Lenny was the world's greatest living guitarist, that's endorsement enough for me.I'll be heading to a record store this week to buy a few of his recordings.BTW his murder is still unsolved.Any Lenny Breau fans out there?

Guitslinger, I got into Lenny Breau after after hearing Randy Bachman talk about learning from him. I was in a jazz guitar program at the time. His material is absolutely staggering. The big guns all considered him their contemporary. Chet Atkins and Co.

Lenny and Chet

quality is iffy at best but the playing is sweet.

I'm not a "huge" Lenny fan but obviously that's because I've never really listened to his material. that being said my good friend/lead guitar player plays lots of his songs. Really amazing stuff. I especialy like his 7 string guitar!

Don't suppose someone should make a thread(if they already haven't) for Randy Bachmans CBC radio show vinal tap? I'm sure most people from Canada know of it. I listen to it every weekend an learn a lot each show! Really interesting eh?

He was an incredible technician, a true guitar master. I believe that Andy Summers also took lessons from him.

I had an old vinyl album from him that I loved to listen to. Unfortunately I wasn't much of a guitar player at that time so years ago I stopped listening to that kind of music. Might as well give it a second shot now. :)

After I first heard Lenny about 13 years ago, I stopped playing for a couple days cuz I knew I would never play like him. I got over my lack of skill at the time and just kept trying to get better. I only have one album..."Boy wonder" or something along those lines. He was unreal. Not human if you ask me.

I first got turned on to Lenny Breau 'round about 1974. Got a record from back then called "The Velvet Touch of Lenny Breau - LIVE!" That was just about the same time I was introduced to Joe Pass. They were two giants and I wish they were still with us. Dope got Lenny and booze got Joe. What a friggin' drag. Gonna fire up the old turntable right now and listen to Lenny play "Mercy, Mercy, Mercy"

Hearing Lenny play those smooth, crystalline, octave, harmonic arpeggios was always cool for me. It's too bad about his cause of death. It seems that some of the best guitarists go down some violent ends of the road.
