This is a response needed input thread..

As some may know, in Classical Music, many of the Wunderkinds are playing on 1600 to 1700 Stradivarius's or Guarneri's or Del Gesu's, all demanding multiple 7 figure prices.
Many of these world class musicians do not have the resources to go out and purchase these priceless instruments thus for them, there is a viable option.

A few private collectors and/or organizations actually loan these instruments out to musicians for a certain period of time. Thus, the public is able to hear these violins, Cello's, Viola's in a concert or recording.
Instead of these instruments sitting in a Glass Case.
Imagine Renee Fleming being mute, so is a silent instrument.

My point is: It is time for the musician's industry and collectors to allow these priceless 53-56 Strats, 59 Les Pauls, Fender Reverbs etc...etc... to be loaned out to musicians so they can truly be heard and not kept silent.

Yes I know, Billy Gibbons, Eric Clapton, Joe Bonamassa, and many others can afford to buy vintage instruments, but many world class talented musicians cannot, so if a foundation existed to do just that it would be great and we as musicians and listeners would become that much more enriched..

I quite like that idea, but there's two main problems that i can see with it.
1. The organisation would need A LOT of funding to buy the instruments to begin with.
2.Guitar players wouldn't be as "careful" as violin players and would be way more likely to damage the instruments, thus requiring insurance which since the instruments would be so valuable would have a biblically high premium.

I certainly agree with you,I imagine that there are probably thousands of wonderful vintage instruments sitting silently hermetically sealed in vaults in Japan and other places doing nothing but appreciating in value for the non-playing collectors that own them.To me this is downright sinful, these wonderful instruments were built to be played and to bring joy to the player and listener. As the owner of a relatively small(27)collection of guitars I consider my self a temporary custodian rather than an owner as I feel it's my duty to keep these instruments in absolutely top condition for players hopefully in centuries to come to enjoy.I may have strayed off topic a bit but what I 'm trying to say is that all instruments should be played and enjoyed and not sitting mute in a dark chamber.I have a 6 CD set of Mozarts complete string quartets played by the American String Quartet on a matched set of Stradivarius instruments loaned from the Dr. Herbert Axelrod Collection and it is truly sublime. It is people such as he that should be in possession of beautiful vintage guitars but sadly they are in the hands of non-playing speculators who have more regard for money than music.I have loaned out some of my vintage gear to certain musicians(who appreciate their value)to use when recording and I really get a good feeling from doing that, knowing that that instrument is being immortalized.

Tochai

The instruments are not always owned by the organization, they (the organization) are the curator/ custodian, But as far as damage to to the equipment, they would be insured and I would suspect that the needed qualification to be permitted to borrow such instruments would have to be quite rigorous. Pete Townshend wanna-bee's need not apply.
No matter How great the music, once you destroy an instrument onstage, that band or musician has turned me off. "I'm out-ta there" regardless wether it is a Custom Shop ( My appologies to Mike Eldred ) or an inexpensive copy. Someone, somewhere cannot afford an inexpensive instrument or an expensive one.

While not exactly what you are talking about, there is SIR, which offers various current and vintage equipment on a rental basis:

Ding, Ding, Ding -- We have a winner. Tochai is exactly right to the most likely reason on why this would never get off the ground.

I don,t think that playin a real 62 strat as compaired to a Custome Shop 62 is that big of a diff. Claptons not playin old vintage guitars on tour. Not worth taking the chance of damaging the equipment.
