I bought this awesome Fender shirt a few days back, the 'Hollywood High' one and it has some chinese characters across the front:

Anyone know what this says? I can make a few guesses, but it bugs me that I really have no idea. After living overseas for some time, I've seen a number of hilarious shirts with bad english. Hoping this isn't the same deal just with Chinese.

Thanks!

I have a Chinese friend that helped me out. It says: Tokyo Japan. In chinese letters! How ironic is that? Could have been worse, though.

I guess I kind of like the irony in it.

You know, when I first saw it, I thought that's what it said, but I stayed quiet because I can't read Chinese. However, I have been to Tokyo enough to recognize that 東京 is Kanji for Tokyo. A quick Wikipedia search confirms that 日本 is indeed Nihon (Japan).

Japanese has three writing systems depending on the origin of a given word. The older words are rendered in Chinese characters known as Kanji. This is an ideographic system, the name of which literally means "Han characters." Literary Korean also uses Chinese characters, by the way. Japanese, Chinese and Koreans can all read this system of writing, but the words will be pronounced differently in each of the languages.

Japanese also uses two different syllabary systems: Hiragana for native Japanese words and Katakana for words borrowed from foreign languages. I was once reasonably competent at reading Katakana, but I haven't been to Japan in about five years, so I'm definitely rusty.

So I'm guessing what you have there is a Fender Japan t-shirt. How about posting a shot of yourself modeling the garment in question?

Domo arigato! 8)

Sorry to get all language-nerdy, but I love this stuff.

I'm Asian, just not Chinese, but lately I have had the urge to ask non-Asian people who have Asian words/characters/symbols tattooed on them what they mean...then after they tell I want to say,"I guess it can mean that/be translated into that too.", just to scare the crap out of them...
