Sounds to me you just did not like the feel of the neck so the guitar was never going to appeal to you!!!!
Are you comfortable with all Fender necks C, D, soft V, V, all three radius they offer? Or just one?

you know your prob right. I have played a few guitars (ibanez wizard neck, les paul 60s neck, sg 50s neck i think, fender D neck, fender C neck and out of all that i have played, the fender C shaped neck, rosewood with medium jumbo frets feels most natural to me.

Looks like a Fender strat with a humbucker and C shaped neck is the way to go.

Off topic here: did they produce them into '64 at all? I thought production on LP's halted at the end of 63 and didn't start up again until 68. If they were made in early 64 then that axe must be worth a fortune.

Hi Schmintan I agree with Alanssaab, the Epi G-400s are great guitars and certainly give the Gibsons a run for the money.I have G-400 Custom(3 pups gold plated hardware)and it's a simply superb guitar. This was my 1st Epi and I was so impressed that I've bought 4 more Epis since and all are great guitars,as a matter of fact I bought a used 06 Custom Shop sunburst Epi Firebird and it sounds almost identical to a mid-late 60s SG.If you want Gibson sound and great quality for a price about 1/4-1/3 of a Gibson check out an Epi.

I don't know, I can only go by what the owned said. He may have picked it up in 64. The guy's a bit older than me. I always thought me Strat was a 73 because that's when I got it. When I took it apart, the neck says March of 72 and the pot codes date to 72 also. I always thought they stopped in 58 and started up again in 68.. He said he paid $300 for it. All I know is it plays incredibly well and sounded beautiful. It was really old.

The Les Paul was discontinued in 60 and transformed to the horned Solid Guitar in 61. Les Pauls went back into production in 68.

The QC of late is hit or miss with Gibson. I tried a SG faded that was garbage, although got a LP Trad Pro which is quite alright.

Dollar for dollar Fender seems to have a better product to offer as Gibson has to many gimmicks, i.e. zoot and buckethead and who knows what is next.[/b]

I had a Lefty Gibson SG Special a few years ago. The frets were so bad on it I actually cut my finger on one.

Sold It.

Gibson uses basically 3 different necks.

ReIssue 50's
LP 50's
LP 60's (same as ReIssue 60's)

They are measured at the first and 12th frets from the front straight through to the back of the neck. They measure like this:

ReIssue 50's: .900 inch at 1st fret, 1.0 inch at 12th fret

LP 50's: .818 inch at 1st fret, .963 inch at 12th fret

LP 60's .800 inch at 1st fret, .850 inch at 12th fret

The ReIssue 50's neck is HUGE and very uncomfortable to play

The LP 50's is still big but is at least tolerable

The LP 6's is a very nice neck and is quite comfortable.

That's what I thought. I going to call my buddy about his Goldtop. He's not really a guitar player he's a harp player who collects guitar, amps, microphones. I'll bet it's a 58. Fender has its share of problems and gimmicks too. Road Worn, Greasebucket circuitry. Fret sprout, setup problems. The QC at Fender is pretty hit and miss. Don't even get me started on the amps. I think most big manufacturers are like that.

Gibson Faded series aren't there best products.

in my continuing search for a nice double humbucker guitar, i decided to take off my brand name glasses ( im a bit of a brand snob) and try something a little unknown to me. Went into the local Cort shop and after playing a few nice guitars i found a guitar that played absolutely awesomely!

Cort Z custom OPNB:

[/url]

The color is the blond maple, non glossy, so you can feel the grain of the wood and even see some of the pores in the wood.

They didnt have my pod x3 for me to try it out on, but they plugged me into a black star head and cab. It felt really really good. neck not too wide, not too flat, but also not to narrow like the vintage fenders. fret job nice. coil tapping. nice growl from the pickups, without being metaly. very rock/blues feel to it.

Im still not fully comfortable with buying a guitar thats not by a well known, or classic brand/company, but i hear good things about cort. Gona think about it a bit more and see if i can get over the name on the headstock. it is a really pretty guitar with some real nice innovations to improve playibility such as:

carved body to make it lighter and also more playable.
locking tuners. have these on my Am Dlx and wouldnt be without them.
coil tapping to give a nice single coil sound(no strat, but not bad).
almost no heel at the butt of the neck allowing real easy access to higher frets.

anyone advise on Cort and in particular the Z custom? 600 euros, which is not too bad if its a good guitar i guess.

That is right. 1960 was the last year of true Les Pauls. The '61,'62,'63 Les Pauls were actually SGs. Les Paul protested mightily aginst Gibson to remove his name. But the story goes that Gibson had so many plates with Les Paul already made, thay wanted to keep the name so those plates would not be wasted. In 1964, it was re-named SG. Then, in 1968, Gibson re-introduced the true Les Paul model and has been in production ever since.

I'm kind of boycotting Cort because of the huge labor and human rights dispute going on.

I really like some of the Reverend guitars. Well made, affordable, great necks and they have a tone blending feature where you can blend between a single coil and humbucker sound. I was thinking it might work pretty cool with my Egnaters tube mix control. :D

News update, my friend just confirmed his LP Goldtop is a 1958 that he bought in 1964 for $300. He said, I thought you knew they stopped making LP's for 10 years. He said I really hardly even play guitar and I knew that! He said he thought It would be worth a lot of money someday. I don't think I'll be using it on gigs anymore. Now I'm a little nervous about borrowing it. He just laughs at me.

I bought one (SG Special) in November, financed over 12 months. As soon as November 2010 rolls around, I plan on trading in for a Daphne Blue Mustang.
