Ya know, guitar hero the game?

I reckon its pretty dumb, why dont you play actaul guitar??? I mean, its a good idea for people who just dont want to play the guitar, but wanna do something musically, but I overheard a conversation at school, and a guy said, "guitars hero's way awesomer than actual guitar" blah blah blah...Thats just taking it to far, dont ya reckon?

my nephew has the game, and i refuse to play it. he says that i should be good at it. i told him to take guitar lessons, and call me when he can play as good as i can.

from what i see, the game is counter-intuitive to the way you actually play.

Okay, let's get down to brass tax here ... The game is nothing more than pressing colored buttons as the colors appear on the screen. Really, music has nothing to do with it. If you are good at video games, you will likely be good at it. And being able to play cello, trumpet, or guitar is likely not going to make you any better or worse at it.

But Guitar Hero is good because it exposes kids to lots of different music instead of a silly video simple synth soundtrack. Just recently -- because of Guitar Hero -- my 16-year-old daughter asked me about seeing the Joe Perry Project live. I almost fell out of my chair ...

As I understand it, the game is played by a color appearing on a screen and the player pressing a corresponding button on a guitar or drum shaped console while music plays. That doesn't strike me as being any fun, but many people enjoy it so more power to them. As to it being better than playing an actual instrument, I think only a guitarist or drummer could make that value judgement, and I don't think I know any guitarists, for example, who play it.

"Guitar Hero" is a game for people who can't play a real guitar. All my life I have had no musical talent what-so-ever and I even avoided "Guitar Hero" because of this reason. However when the 3rd game came out I was finally convinced to give it a try and I absolutely loved the game. I became very good at it. Being able to complete these songs gave me a sense of accomplishment, it made me feel... well, like a guitar hero.

It inspired me to try a real guitar and even though the real thing is much harder than a button pushing video game i'm learning and I think i'm getting better.

I'm not saying that a video game gave me the musical talent that I had never had before, but it did give me the confidence to try and stick with it whereas I had always given up before. So I believe that if anything positive ever comes out of my guitar playing it will be thanks to "Guitar Hero".

It might be interesting to note that since I got my guitar I have not played the video game a single time. I now get my sense of accomplishment from playing the "real thing".

The "Guitar Queer-O" episode of South Park sums it up nicely.

Given your experience FBRN, I'm very happy for you and if the game was your path to a lifelong musical journey, I say it's well worth it! Congratulations upon you choice of instruments (I'm somewhat partial to guitars myself!), and the very best of luck with your pursuit!

Its just like any video game where many will enjoy it, some will go the next step and try whatever the game is actually about, and a few will think the game is just like reality, but then again, those types may be likely to believe that any game is reality, not just Guitar Hero...But personally, I have the same opinion/conclusion that South Park reached regarding the game... :P

i have no problem with guitar hero or rock band. they're supposed to just be games, nothing like actual guitar. i mean, if you buy a joystick for your computer and play a flight sim game, it's not like you're going to be good at flying a plane.

i don't play guitar hero, though it is kinda fun, i'll admit. (though i think playing 'real' guitar is a lot more fun  )

as for the kids that said guitar hero is better than real guitar, just find comfort in the fact that you have talent at something and they don't. besides, the music on those games wouldn't have been made without real guitars anyway. don't let people like that get to you, they don't know what they're talking about.

The difference being that I do have a pilot's license, and the simulator, while no substitute for actual flight time, does help keep your proficiency up when there are protracted periods of time when you can't get to the airport.

THAT guy is a douchebag. I've tried it. The only way I can score high is if I tune the music out. Then I'm just pressing buttons. If it makes people want to pretty a real guitar, then that's fine. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. Except your school mate who thinks GH is better than real guitar. He's 14 or 15 years old right?

I have to say that I also started playing because of this game. I wish I had a cooler story but I don't. I had a guitar as a kid and had no lessons and I couldn't figure it out on my own so I just gave it us as an impossible instrument to play. I thought that Guitar Hero was the geekiest thing I had ever seen and refused to play it. Then one weekend my best friend bought it and brought it to my house. He had known that I had always regretted not learning how to play the real thing. He was trying so hard to get me to play with him that I felt bad and broke down and I got hooked. My immediate thought was if I'm having this much fun playing this stupid thing then I need to try again with a real one. I went out and bought an electric guitar and amp soon after and took 6 months of lessons once a week starting at age 33. Here I am 2 years later having never played the game in the last year and a half and I play the real thing. I can't be to annoyed with a game that sent me on my path to what I love.

My bro has it and its bloody good fun! as said previously musical ability has nothing to do with it. its how fast you can hit a colored button.

As long as some parents dont buy it as in intro into learning a musical instrument, there is no harm in it.

And as stated previously, it exposes kids to some really awesome music that they would never hear in the charts or on the radio. My bro started listening to Credence Clearwater revival because of it!!

My only gripe with it is kids spending hours/days/weeks to become awesome and be able to play one by metallica on difficult. if they put in the same time on a real guitar they could come close to playing one for real!

Fun, with good music, if used in moderation.
