Fans at more adult performances like Brian Setzer burn me too. Not all of them ... just the idiots who need to be on their feet and dancing around for just about every song. You can't see through them and because they're moving around so much, can't angle yourself to see past them. So you've just paid $200 (self + GF) to see the backs of three middle aged out of control women for two hours.

I've gone to several other not-for-kids but lively concerts as well and same deal -- some jack&sses just refuse to sit down. They're "excited" as one put it in reaming out someone else for asking them nicely if they could please sit.

Example: two women and three guys $@!&# so excited that they have to dance to each number ... even the slow ones ... at a James Taylor concert????? If they're that excitable, maybe they need to see their doctor, but I'm sick and tired of them sitting in front of me and the ushers don't do a thing. I'm not the only one with this complaint either.

The fact is that if you need to be on your feet the whole time, most venues set aside an area on the floor for exactly that purpose. Call it a pit or whaterver you want. That's what it's there for. So if you need to be up dancing around except maybe for the band's "signature" number (where it's expected that many will be up), then please, please buy tickets in the pit. The venue will NOT give me my money back just because all I could see for two hours was your butt waving in my face.

It's a concert. A party atmosphere where many people want to dance and let loose. Your expectation is like someone going to a party and sitting on the couch and listening to music and when you can't hear the lyrics in the music you ask people to sit down and be quiet. And as far as your suggestion that these people should buy tickets in the pit...that may be so but usually the pit sells out quickly and tickets in the pit are more expenxsive. Since you are suggesting where others should buy their tickets..has it occured to you to buy tickets in the front row of a section? That way no one will be directly in front of you.

The bottom line is loosen up it's a concert.

Hi Knitgirl,I must say that I side with Philip 602 on this one. When I spend good money to go to a concert I'm paying to see and hear an artist that I like not to see someones arse waving in my face every second song.If I wanted to lighten up and dance I'd go to a dance bar and dance but I go to a concert for the express purpose to see an artist not somebody's jiggling derriere.

That's fine. So are you saying that people that go to concerts...only go to concerts to listen to music and watch the band while seated? What about people who want to stand up or dance what should they do? It's Rock and Roll...not orchestra or chamber music. I never have seen any venue rules that prohibit standing or dancing. If the venues prohibited standing or dancing then I could understand your position. I guess my point is that expecting people to remain seated and not dance at a Rock and Roll concert is unrealistic.

I and my girlfriend felt/feel same way you do. During the past year and a half after paying to see Joan Jett and The Blackhearts, and The 88 with The B-52's at The Mayo Center for Performing Arts/The Community Theater in Morristown, N.J. I've had it with the thoughtlessness of some concert goers and COWARDICE of employees. I'm disabled and though I don't use a wheelchair I cannot stand for an entire performance to see the band I have since started buying seats in the first row of the 2nd balcony this way no one would be standing in the seat in front of me. Since this is an aisle that must be kept clear as per "fire regulations" I thought I was going to be OK. I still wound up staring at the "wide load" derriere's of middle aged, horn rimmed glassed, Birkenstock sandal wearing,"counter-culture" type "females?" who I've learned buy eight seats in the last row of the venue to gain admission but NEVER occupy said seats. I made a point of mentioning this to the box office when calling for Blondie tix and was comped two seats in the last row of the first balcony and again I was treated to the ever widening rear-end of another pair of selfish broads who even after being informed of my inability to see the stage continued to gyrate and shake the upper level of the theater with their fried food and alcohol engorged bodies. In each instance after politely asking the "obstructions to my vision" to vacate my line of sight I was ignored. Also in each case these "offenders" would repeatedly careen out of control while flailing (they don't dance) and fall both forward and backward over the railing nearly landing entirely in my lap. Pleas to the male ushers were utterly useless as they admitted they were "afraid" of angering the already intoxicated offending quetionably "female" parties.

I'll be taking my girlfriend to see Pat Benatar this year AT ANOTHER VENUE. This time I'll try the Bergen Performing Arts Center in Engelwood N.J. where after explaining my experiences and predicament I was assured they DO NOT tolerate that type of behavior.

Artists (I use that term loosely) I Can't Stand:

Lady Gaga (or is that Gag-Gag?)
Boston
Glenn Frey
Guitarists who mistake technique for talent
Boston (again...I hate them that much)
Any and all tribute bands, especially all the Stevie Ray Vaughan-abees
Journey
Billy Ray Cyrus...and his offspring
Any artist that is headlining a show and then only plays ten songs
Any artist that refuses to play their hits because "I've progressed beyond those songs..."; Well, "those songs" are why you are able to travel in style and don't have to work 7-5 like your audience who is paying to see you, you idiot!
...and conversely--Any artist that plays only the hits from their hey-day; some of your real fans want to hear the deep album tracks or the new stuff, too.

Artists + Their Fans I Can't Stand:

The Cure
James Taylor
Megadeth
Slayer
Kenny Chesney
Yes
Styx (x3)
Yngwie
All of the "I'm going to sing like I'm an effeminate Englishman" keyboard-laden crap from the 80s
Any and all Prog/Art Rock
Modern Nash-Vegas pop artists who claim to be "country"
Purists of any sort (or any musical genre); come on, if we didn't add to or bastardize other forms of music, we would never have progressed past banging two rocks together. "No, Grog! You cannot bang stick against rock! You are destroying the purity of our art!!"
The Beach Boys, especially Mike Love

Fans I Can't Stand:

Phish
Grateful Dead
Jimmy Buffet (Parrotheads Unite--in the middle of a nuclear reactor!)
Nirvana
Alabama

There's that wonderful story about when U2 were playing in Glasgow a few years back Bono stopped to do his whole 'save the world' thing and said:

'Every time I click my fingers a child in Africa dies'

To which a burly Scotsman shouted back:

'Then stop clickin' yer f***** fingers!!!'

 For once we firmly agree my bro!

I can't stand the guy. Imagine paying money just to hear him preach all night? It would do your head in. Being in Ireland here there are many fans floating about but I can't stand the guy. I think The Edge is over-rated too. Just a delay pedal with a solid section behind him. I've yet to meet a guitarist who says the reason they play guitar is because of him but I've met a few who have said the reason they picked up a delay pedal is because of him.

I think Coldplay are similarly dire. Like a U2 junior!

Wow Screamin Armadillo, it would have been easier for you to state the one band you like and then just say you hate everything else.

I don't really hate anything, I just prefer to listen to some music more than other.

I have been buying more DVDs and blu-rays of concerts rather than going to shows. But I would not expect people to sit down at a rock or pop concert. You have to go with the expectation that people are going to get into it. When you play would you rather the audience just sit there and watch?

Totally! I think some people are forgettin that the most natural reaction to music is to dance. I would sit at an orchestra but rock n' roll is rock n' roll and dancing is mandatory in my book. If people were sitting on there a55 halfway through our first song the guitars would be in the cases and a taxi on its way.

Hi again Knitgirl, maybe I'm a bit old school but being a musician my main objective of going to a concert IS to see and hear the artists I've paid to see. While other concert goers may have every right to dance and booze and whoop it up when it infringes on my right to see and hear the performer(s) it is not right.Venues usually have areas set aside for those who'd rather party than listen but if they can't or won't go to these areas they should act with some decorum and respect those concert goers whose main reason to come to the concert was to enjoy the act not the drunken antics of those more iterested in partying. Also after working with diisabled people for 30+ years I've seen their concert going experiences ruined by inconsiderate bimbos who couldn't care less if they block someone elses view,I just have no time for people who are so self centered that they show no regard for other people and would inconvenience anyone to have their own bit of fun.
