Pick up the new book 60 Years of Tone, the Fender Amp story and get reading This will give you some idea what to expect from many Fender amps vintage, mid-aged, and new. Other than, or in addition to that pick up a modlling amp such as the Roland Cube 30. The Roland will give you many sounds and from it you may be able to narrow down the basic tone you seek and you can then narrow down which is the most likely tube amp to pursue. Call me a snob but only tubes produce true tone!

Hey, I'm not a guitar bum or a pro like Bamboo and Gravity, but I am a hobbyist who plays a lot and need a versatile amp that will also hold up when jamming - on a budget.

For me, after a lot of looking, the Blues Junior was the best choice. It's all tube, with a solid state rectifier, and lists a Jensen or Celestion 12" speaker so you get plenty of bottom-end. The reverb is good, and I totally disagree with any complaints about that reverb. The tone gets fat at low volumes if you use the preamp volume knob and the fat switch to saturate the tubes and then adjust loudness with the master. It's phenomenal for blues, clean worship, anything like that, with no additions. Is it loud enough? Mine will peel the paint off the walls. I've had "15 watt" amps before, and this little thing with it's "15 tube watts" is a whole different animal.
