Man I need help. I am an intermediate player. I have a 96 fender fat strat. I am in an amplifier quandry. I play mostly blues, souther rock and country. I am not sure which direction to go on an amp. I know I want to go tube but,,, Do I go with a new botique amp or risk an older amp. Of course every music store I go to recommends what they sell. I am hoping for some help from you all who have some hands on experience. I recently played through a deville 4x10. It was nice but I am just not sure. I appreciate the help.

Do you play:

1. alone or with a band?
2. at home or out (for money)
3. quiet, moderately loud or loud?

What three guitar players do you most admire the sound of?

If you are interested in an amp with a great clean sound that you can push into overdrive with pedals, I would recommend a Fender '65 Deluxe Reverb RI. At 22 tube watts, it is plenty loud even for clubs and can be pushed into overdrive even by single coils... with a TS-9 or similar over drive unit (or a clean boost if that's more your speed), you can make them sing at lower volumes.

If you're less interested in the clean sound than in a singing overdriven tone that can be easily controlled by your touch or the guitar's volume knob, then you want a 15-watt Tweed Deluxe type amp. It doesn't have to be old or boutique: kit-built amps sound awesome, as do amps from small builders like Li'l Dawg and Richter.

EIther way, you can get a sound that will last you for years and years for somewhere between $500 and $800. Either amp would feature a single 12 and are would be highly portable, great sounding and good looking.

8) 15 Watts ????? where Ya goin play it ? In the the bathroom ???
My drummer will blow right over the top a that .. First rule: a strat
without humbuckers is goina need at least 50 watts for punch an
clairty ... if your goina use peddles it just won't sound real .. If ya
add a bass player to that . they just won't here ya.!!! You"ll be back
to shoping for another Amp. Got a Strat ? Your goina need horse power.
Be happy an get some.. Witt from The BIG BAMBOO..guitar bum

15W can be pretty loud. I've got a Peavey Classic that cranks at 15W. Good enough for jamming or practice but I wouldn't gig with it.

A nice 40W Deluxe with a good OD should do the trick.

Remember, 40W tube power is louder then 40W solid state. Keep that in mind when amp shopping.

I am using a B-52 100 watt tube amp and it sounds sweet, heavy as a brick though. It was an affordable tube amp with alot of power and great sound for a fair price. You may want to check them out.

"First rule." You kill me. Bamboo, I don’t think you understand how wattage affects tone and volume.

Volume increases in a logarithmic scale. A 15-watt guitar amp produces 70% of the volume of a 50 watt amp. A 22 watt amp will play almost 80% as loud.

There is also the affect of perceived volume, or just how loud something needs to be for humans to hear it. A 5-watt tube amplifier driven with single coils will produce the same SPL as a trumpet.

The amps I recommended are widely accepted as great sounding amps (not just “most watts for the buck” guitar loudeners like the Hot Rod Deluxe, for example), and are plenty loud for gigging in any venue. If your band is too loud for a guitar player to use a naked 15-watt tweed Deluxe, then your amp would most likely be mic’ed.

In short, there’s no advantage to playing through big, heavy high-wattage amps, and there is certainly no “rule” about 50-watts being a membership requirement of The Gigging Club. Thousands of experienced pros and semi-pros are gigging with Deluxe clones and DRRI’s. And a drummer who can crown out a 15-watt tweed Deluxe isn’t a real drummer, but an overcompensating pounder.

Clapton tours with his 40W 57 Twin thru a Leslie cab. No problems. He recorded 461 Ocean Blvd. with a 40W Pignose!

The last time I played out I used a 30W Goldtone RVS. It was plenty loud. These days I can't even imagine hauling around a 100W Marshall and a couple of 4X12 cabs. Why bother? I can mic a tasty 30 or 40W amp and do just fine.

The advantage of a smaller amp is you can get that wonderful power tube saturation. Try getting that with a 100W amp in a normal sized bar.

I gotta say that my 100 watt is way overkill for house use but the price was right and so was the sound and we occasionally do outside gigs and I knew i would never be in short supply of power. A good p.a. system will help where you may lack in amp power.

Trade secrets? Please. You seem to be trying to create some kind of persona for yourself here as a hard-gigging, well-seasoned rocker-biker-pirate with a Dutch Uncle tone and a ridiculously inflated opinion of his own misspelled advice.

Also, I have to assume that you checked my profile and guessed that my e-mail address refers to a music store.

Actually, Gravity Music is an award-winning music production company, where I compose, play and produce music for commercial applications (advertising, trade shows, events, and scores for documentary film) in my own studio. I have been a professional musician since 1972, playing guitars, keyboards and bass in a wide range of situations, from rock band to pit band.

So let's stop smoking that Big Bamboo and get you sobered up, huh?
