Okay, I've read the article now. Since I had no previous knowledge of the subject, I didn't find anything particularly offensive about the story. It dealt very honestly with the bad things the guy has done. His kind of music is not to my taste, but he does seem to be a significant figure for the genre. All in all, I thought it was actually a pretty even-handed piece.

Very open minded and objective, do you think you might display the same sort of compassion say 1 of the 2 individuals murdered were close to you personally? With that in mind is it still even handed if you were to feel it?

The article intended or not, was a promotion, undeserved in his lifetime, regardless of his significance to black metal, which he admits he is only doing for the money if you read thru the lines in the last paragraph on page 33. You take a life, you lose yours.

A lot of musicians/entertainers have probably all done something in their past that someone would find weird, offensive, repulsive, and/or sick...Granted, some people do things that take it to another level...

The sad reality is, that the for the genre of music for the particular individual in question death and hate sell records, the more lethal and hate filled, the more units that might possibly move...that is why I say death and black metal often borderline pro wrestling as far as things being overhyped and exaggerated for shock/marketing value...

Another sad reality is that print magazine and print newspaper sales are on a major decline...you gotta do something to sell magazines off the shelf...whether its getting Playboy models or Bret Michaels sloppy seconds posing with guitars...or perhaps covering some controversial figure that no other mainstream magazine would dare cover...

That's a spurious argument based on emotion. Obviously this doesn't affect me directly. But even it it did, I hope that would not cause me to change my principles.

I guess I'm just not as easily offended as some people. Nor am I inclined to call for unpopular viewpoints to be silenced. I can see why this article might upset people with a certain worldview; however, there is literally nothing that won't offend somebody. I'd rather have complete access to all kinds of information and decide for myself what I want rather than have someone else make the decision for me. Censorship is and always has been an ugly impulse.

I think people's reactions to this article say more about them than about the subject of the piece. 8)

I've tried to like GW magazine for the tab helps and the monthly songs but i have to say it isn't for all guitarists. There is way too much metal content and not enough to cover all genres of music. I only buy copyies that have articles on my interest in them which is few and far between.
