Tuesday I received my copy of Guitar World and was pleased to see that there was a good article on Jimi Hendrix.I was absolutely appalled to see an extensive article singing the praises of convicted murderer, church arsonist and confirmed anti-Christ Varg Vikernes the Norwegian black metal guitarist and band leader from the 80s.I wrote the magazine a letter voicing my disgust. This Mag is about the only Guitar Mag that chooses not to edit out expletives from their more inarticulate interviewees,I'm really questioning whether or not I should renew my subscription to this magazine for promoting such a hateful person.I imagine if they printed an article on a murdering anti-Semetic or rascist there would be an uproar, I wonder how much protest this will garner.

I know how you feel about these people Glen Benton of Deicide was similar.

Fact is he's served his time. You could argue that guitarworld are being sensationalist as they've nothing better to do. I wouldnt bother trying to push the moral highground argument though. It just belittles your position by making you seem pompous. I'd send em a letter saying something along the lines of

'Have you really got nothing better to do then sensationalize a crap guitarist in a little known metal band? I really hope the standard of that article is not a sign of things to come. It doesnt qualify as news, rock and rebellion, metal and satanism have been intertwined since their conception. Which really makes the article on victor venerealdisease (or whatever his name is) olds, not news'.

That should get all their backs up.

Very well put Nik,anyway I sort of touched on that part of it by asking them if they intended to do features of Charles Manson and David Duke.

Makes you wonder and question many things, Guns N' Roses cover of Charles Manson's 'Look At Your Game Girl' being a major point. There's wanting to delve into a dark mind for arts sake and bringing that to the fore and there's doing the 'cos it's cool' thing also.

That Norway black metal 5h1t is exactly that. 5h1t.

That wouldn't be PC. It is however ok to talk badly about Christianity. I don't know why. But that's the way it is in America. Political Correctness has ruined this country.

You can say that again. I once saw an interview with Colin Powell and the news guy referred to him as "African American" That term makes me nuts. He is from Jamaica. So in reality, it is a label used to distinguish color anyway. I mean... would you refer to a white person, of Irish Ancestry that is from South Africa that moves to the U.S. as an "African American"? I doubt it!

Two of my friends are actually black and FROM Africa, both happen to be from Nigeria. I can't print how they refer to "African Americans" for fear of incurrring the wrath of the pc police (especially those who dress in mock African garb) . I'm with you on the PC front. Folks should be polite but most of it is just ridiculous. One thing we don't have (and shouldn't have) is the right "not to be offended".

Guitar World was cool 15-20 years ago when I was a teenager, cause it seemed be run by people with the same mentality, but I guess they never grew up over there...

As far as how much protest it will get, I'm not sure how much it will get...I mean as long as they are talking about his music and not promoting his hate filled agenda, thats pretty much the excuse they'll use...

Serial killers and murderers are good for business...but don't get mad at me for stating something that just is...Just look at all the programming on History Channel, TruTV, A&E, Lifetime, Discovery, along all the 48 Hours and Dateline Mysteries that are on TV on a weekly basis, and these are just the news/documentary shows...I'm not even talking about fictional programs about murderers and killers...

And while I like metal, death metal is the one form of the music that I think is sort of like pro wrestling, in that most people sort of know its mostly an act or fantasy world, but you will have the occasional person who does not get it, and takes it too far or thinks thats the way of the world...And to me thats the deal with all these European Death Metal bands who kill other bandmembers or themselves or burn churches down, etc...they either forget or just don't get it to begin with...

Luckily there are only like 2 bands like that. That I know of. The singer for Gorgoroth (SP) is a bit whacky too. I guess he's just eccentric. Those "show bands" are crap anyway. Ok, to me they are crap. Cradle of Filth, Behemoth, Celtic Frost, Dimmu Borgir, etc. All appeal to teenagers who only like them in hopes their parents and peers will hate them. I love real death metal. I just hate most of the fans.

I'm pretty much with you there...DEATH, to me, is the only death metal band that matters... :D

I have two very close friend who refer to themselves proudly as black as they are neither African nor American, one is from Antigua and the other from Barbadoes and both are Canadian citizens.

Guitar World has indeed gone downhill.

Their focus is quite narrow--but every now & then they stretch out a bit.

Guitar for the Practicing Musician had better transcriptions, and Guitar Player had better interviews.

This goons from a black metal band, how un-pc is that

Anyway theres a world of difference between that stuff and Death Metal. Black Metal is more bands like Candlemass, quite slow, boring and dirge like.
It's like the goth of metal. It tries to act hard but everyone knows its weak and laughs at it behind its back.
