My son and his band did a quick show the other night in a small local coffee house (their first as a band) and it went well except for the fact that their drummer is really loud. Due to the time constraints of other performers, there was no opportunity for balancing or sound checks. What is the best method in terms of placement, height, etc to mic his amp (Hot Rod DeVille 4X10). Are there specific microphones that are better for this application? Any help is appreciated.

The best advice is this:

Get a better drummer.

I'm not kidding. Guys who whack away at top volume, so loud they drown out a 4x10 Deville in a coffeeshop aren't musicians and should be fired.

If you MUST enter into a volume war with this unskilled pounder, then the easiest advice is to mic your amp with a Shure SM57. Move it around the cabinet until you find the nicest sounding spot, which will likely be halfway between the center and the rim of one of the speakers.

There are lots of mics that sound great with guitar cabs, but 57s are cheap and plentiful.

I agree with G.J. A good drummer will play the situation. If he's playing just to hear himself pound on the drums instead of managing the music, he doesn't belong there.

Ok, I'll be redundant.....fire the drummer if he won't balance his performance to the rest of the band. There's no call for that and if he doesn't or won't understand that, then he's not a good band member.

The SM57 is the way to go. Placing the mic at the center gives a boomy, bass tone and becomes more bright as you move it towards the rim.
