I blame Y2K...

Or perhaps its just the beginning of the end of the world, like that John Cusack movie states...you know, High Fidelity...

Seriously though, if its the same problem with multiple brands, software programming and software components that all the different manufacturers may have in common need to be looked into...somebody screwed up an algorithm somewhere...

Are they all getting them from the same supplier as Toyota?

You mean Y2K10?

The California dude's case seems kinda shaky now (Prius) needing state trooper to pull in front and slow him from 90mph to enough to shut off car???

Gremlins ... It was all explained painfully clear in a Bugs Bunny cartoon I saw as a kid.

Some might call it Law suit paradise. Every none reputable person with a Toyota wakes up and say AHA. Next you are going to see every one who had accidents with them past and future call it into question. Every hack out there will be jumping on the band wagon. You have class action suits in many states for people who own Toyota's that want restitution for the loss in book value of there vehicles even though they have had no problem. It is spiraling.

Hi miami mike, Funny how things work, my wife and I have a 2006 Prius, It seems to be a good car  but since we purchased it in mid 2006, partly for the nice little tax break and it does get really good mileage, anyways my point is we have had to changes many of the bulbs ( turn signals, head lights break light) ect. in the thing and some more than once.
The 3yr warranty expired but the dealer keeps changing the bulbs for free, They said its covered because its an exsisting issue  3 bulbs on it are out now...
My point is IMHO I think it is a computer / electrical problem that is causing these issue.
I just hope they get it fixed so nobody else gets hurt or killed. They should take them off the road until its resolved..
Heck, we are affraid to drive the thing.. I am not one of those lawsuit people but, If we get hurt or killed in the thing due to an issue we cannot control then they should be responsible...

Hey CV, I was down in your neck of the woods for a couple of days. My son was coaching a baseball tournament team. Edgewood, Maryland.
The ride down was brutal.....then games were cancelled....bad timing!

I think some of it is the lawsuit. In Phila, Pa if a public transportation bus in involved in an accident, all of a sudden there's 700 people that were on the bus that holds something like 60 people that have whiplash LOL.

Did anyone ever hear of putting the car in neutral, turning off the engine but not locking the wheel and coasting to a stop using the handbrake?

Meh, I believe it is the result of those companies trying to mash too much technology in their products trying to one-up the competition, the more crap you add the better chance you have of something screwing up. Why I drive a 1994 Honda Civic ^^ It's like the Fender Champ of the car world :P

Yeah, I ended up leaving, but they have a couple of decent games left in the good weather.

That was one of the first things my high school driving instructor J.T. showed us during the first couple sessions in the car. I can't understand how these people are able to dial 911 and talk on their cell and not find a way to shut off the car.
