I wrote a song, and I want to add a solo to it. Frankly, it's harder than I thought it would be. Any tips on writing solos?

one thing you should try to do is to record the song and then improvise over it do this a couple of times and pick out what you think fits best whit the song.....

oh! and try to stay in the same key as the song

Yup, thats the way to go. I don't know anyone who comes up with a lead line in one try. You don't write a song in one pass and you can't write a lead line in one try.

One thing I've learned, is that being satisfied is not an option. You'll always think that it needs some work, changing, adding to etc. You just have to finally go with something.

Most of the time things never get played the same way twice.

One tip that helped me early on is to look at the notes of the chords you are playing, both fretted and open. All of these notes will fit well into your solo. Then try those notes one octave up or down to add even more. Then you can work from there adding other "outside" notes that fit well.

Should give you a good start.
