The other day, my son was complaining about being "Rick Rolled"... Where someone tries to trick you into watching Rick Astley's video. I thought he was joking around, because he knows I hate that song. But, when I did a search, I found out it was a real thing!... When did this start?... And, in heaven's name... Why?

Lol, ahhh yes the stupid internet trend thing is strong. There is no shortage of things like that to pass the time for the 13-25 age group.

I thought it was kind of pointless when my son explained it to me - but I thought it was great when he tried to do it to one of his friends and did it to himself again.

I pointed him at the first episode of "My Name is Earl" for Earl's explanation of karma

So are you trying to say that Rick Astley's music is a bad thing?

Here is a link to a video of more stupid internet trends. It's off that comedy central show Tosh 2.0. I find some of them quite hilarious really ^^

One of the newer viral videos that kind of cracks me up is a 1966 vocal performance by Russian singer Eduard Khil. Khil has become known as the "Trololo Man" for his wordless performance of a song called "I am Very Glad That I am Finally Coming Home."

It has already spawned several parodies, including one by Academy Award winner Christoph Waltz, called "Der Humpink."

I love the internet. 8)

I think the trend of the internet itself is stupid.

I mean don't get me wrong, there is a lot of good that comes from the internet, but there is just as much bad stuff, or perhaps more that comes from the internet. Its one of those things for every 1 or 2 steps we are able to move forward because of something on the internet, we end up taking 2-3 back because of it as well...E-Commerce has lead to a wider marketplace, but then had also opened the door for identity theft, scams, rip-offs, and counterfeits. Granted all those things existed in some capacity before the internet, but perhaps not as much as before the internet. Because prior to the interent, no one realized they were related to some African prince for several generations, and all this money is in an offshore account but in ordered to be accessed, you must pay up front thousands of dollars as a measure of good faith.

The internet, much like technology, has made the world become stupid. I work in a college and all the kids today feel like they know everything about everything just because they looked it up, or they can look it up, on Wiki or Google...Which is pretty much like me telling my teachers in the 80s that I know everything about being a doctor because I read an article in a magazine about being a doctor.

Our relationship with knowledge is simply changing. Performance-support tools like the internet allow for what's known as "just in time" learning. In other words, you access exactly the knowledge you need when you need it in order to accomplish a given task.

I recently had to change the 220V electrical cord on my dryer from a three-prong to a four-prong plug. With a simple internet search, I quickly accessed the diagram that enabled me to do the job. Do I remember how I actually did it? No, but that's okay because I have no need to retain that knowledge. If I have to do it again, I'll just look it up.

There will always be a need for true experts like doctors. But ready access to knowledge for everyone is a good thing. I do not think we are getting stupid--I think we are evolving into something new. 8)

I think the whole Facebook / Myspace / Twitter thing is stupid. Sure that may sound Jaded and anti social but there are some people that spend endless hours on those sites and post what they are doing at every minute.

That was one Fad i had hoped would go away but it has not. I don't have a Facebook or Myspace page and have not desire to create one.

Thats one thing, but I am mainly talking about kids who think that they know everything about everything even though after conversing with them for a minute, its apparent that they do not have any experience with anything other than internet searches. I'm not saying that the ability to look stuff up instantly is not good, its just that I tend to run into people who think that they are a credible expert on something just because they read it on the internet.

For example, with the experience you mentioned, you found a solution for a problem you are having at fixing a cord...I have no problem with that, but some of the people I run into on the college where I work, if they had gone through that exact same experience, they would now claim to be some sort of electrician or claim that they have significant work experience as one. Since you do not claim to be an electrician after this experience, I have no problem with that, but thats the type of stuff that I see people do routinely as a result of looking something up on the internet..."I looked it up, I did it, so I am one."
