one of these came into the pawn shop yesterday, I held it and strummed it a little and no kidding it felt different than any solid body electric guitar I've ever held to the point were I wondered out loud " is there some kind of magic on or in this guitar?" do any of the Bros here on the Forum have one of these or at least played one through a decent rig?

Can't believe you found one in a Pawn shop  I heard those were amazing guitars... apparently G&L market them as Leo Fender's masterpiece or something.... :)

I think I remember Nicky saying something interesting about these guitars. Paging Nicky, paging Nicky please. :) Looks like a killer guitar.

I tried out a friends S500, through a Vox AC4. Now I dont like the Vox sound at all. I tried out his VG before hand (very impressed with that guitar, and would love to see the line6/fender pairing that has been rumoured on this site). I tried his CustomShop 54 a few days before and set it up.

The S500 didnt have the Zcoil pickups that the Comanche has. Those Zcoils are G&L's noiseless offerings. I think they have some kind of balance switch on them, or some models have a switch for each pickup that chooses which part of the pickup you select. So you could have the bass side of the bridge pickup and the Treble side of the Neck pickup. Not sure I think that goes back to the 80's, a long time ago. I cant remember that well.

Playing the mid 90's S500 was an absolute delight. It really seemed like George and Leo took all the niggles of a strat and improved em, then they decided to improve on the strats strengths too. I really liked the guitar, really liked it. I hate to admit that I cant get over the visual changes taking it away from a strat. Still next time I buy a guitar, the Commanche/S500 are in the top 3.

thank you Niki, John put it in the back room of the shop, after I got so excited over it, with the other guitars he says he would like to keep, but I'm pretty sure he would sell, he has that Gold top LP and a couple other LPs back there an old Gibson explorer, a V and a EC Strat, a wild looking solid body electric with an odd shape aluminum headstock and a bunch of other guitars that I don't recognize, when I go visit he lets me go right back there so I can see what new treasures people had to let go,wish you were here Niki you would know what all of these guitars are.

The bass player in my last band had one and it was an amazing instrument, the neck was sublime, you hardly had to touch the strings to fret a note or play a barre chord. The vibrato was by far the best I've used but it was when I plugged it into my JCM 800 that it really took me aback, it had such an amazing sound, when played clean the notes chimed like a bell and when used through an overdriven Marshall it really wailed. I can't say enough good about them as a matter of fact I came close to trading my Vox Astro IV Bass for it and that in itself speaks volumes.

An apartment in Illinois, with a guitar hording, guntotoing landlord, and me whose always had a bit of a blackspot with any form of authority?

That sounds like a bigger disaster movie than the Towering Inferno

Wicker Park, IL. , the band WickerMan was a good band, the hood is OK, "and me whose always had a bit of a blackspot with any form of authority?", everybody around here is so disrespectful in person, Niki you would be their King.

No I'm peacefull and polite to all people, far too soft for my own good. It's just when someone says "you must" or "you should" that I have a bit of a visit to some alternate reality where I become like this bloke.

Luckily without the violence or ripped trousers.

I have 2 G&L's with the Z-coil pickups, a Comanche and an ASAT Z-3 (Tele shape). Both are excellent sounding, classic strat tones, without hum as well as some great sounding overdriven tones. The fit and finish are both outstanding on these guitars. If you get a good deal on a used one, go for it, you will not be disappointed, these are on par with custom shop models.

Big F, thanks, I am going to give that Comanche a more thorough test drive next time I'm at the shop. 8)
