I'm serious mate. We have saints days, eid, ramahdan, all these religeous things. Even a church of the Jedi. Yet I'd argue that elvis bought more joy to the western world during the latter half of the 20th century.

Twelvebar's crotchetty soapbox rant to follow.

Evolution of rock hmm...

To me the path of Rock and Roll took a serious turn, which may have lead to it's current unpalatable state(in my opinion  ) during what many of us consider to be our favorite era. Both these eras were really before my time, though they comprise a disproportionate percentage of my music collection.

There is something magical that got lost during the reinvention of the genre during the mid to late 60's, and into the 70's. Don't get me wrong, I love that stuff too (really that era is truly my favorite, but I see the seeds of what has happened there,). but during the beginning there was a primitive quality that has only been hinted at by later rock stylings.

I think it large part what I think has been missing since the 50's and early 60's has been the gradual shift of Rock and Roll to Rock, and the corresponding divorce of musicianship and dance music. Rock and Roll in its genesis was definitely dance music. It was energetic and fun. During the later Beatles career, and the rise of Hendrix, Clapton, Page et al this aspect certainly took a back seat.

There was a lot of great music made after the shift, in fact most of my favorite stuff, but it is hard to argue that the division between rock and dance hasn't hurt in the long run. Today there is a lot of boring, forgettable, unoriginal, boring(it deserves this word twice,) rock, and a lot of boring, forgettable, unoriginal and unlistenable dance music.

For the most part the days of having tunes that are both fun and easy to dance to, yet enjoyable to actually just listen to are gone. Any that exist are almost certainly not in the rock vein.

Rock was more social then, part of something to do, rather than just a background noise. We need modern music to fuse the two aspects again.

All sounds good. 'Cept I'm with Brian May who said he got into being a rock musician because he couldn't dance and felt like an oaf when he tried. He got up on the stage so that girls might look at him without him having to walk on a dance floor.

My story in a nutshell...

Mine too. I felt that if I couldn't get anywhere watching the band at school dances, then join the band. Worked like a charm.

I have a friend here who, when I said I used to be a musician, asked me how well I danced. "Terrible," I said, "twelve left feet."

"Now I believe you" was her reply. She went on to say she'd dated any number of musicians over the years, including some of note. One thing almost all have in common - they were lousy dancers. Not quite 100% she claimed, but pretty darned close.

I've never verified that, but I have no reason to doubt her either. Interesting that this might be true.

I only tended to get my dancing shoes on towards the end of the night, when things slowed right down, arms & legs never on the same songsheet early on
