thanks guys, I'm really torn. I know the other guys don't want to hurt his feelings, they say were going to tell him how its going to be, guess I'll wait and see. I just don't want to play thru another gig like that. Thanks again, Dutch.

You could always take the hostile approach should he start acting like coco the clown next time mid gig.

Stop the band and apologize to the audience for your bassist acting a pratt.

Or ask em to shout if they think he looks stupid.

and as i've been a reader of your posts for a little over a year, i see it didn't affect your standing in your local industry, in addition to providing you a little satisfaction.

Last gig could've and should've been better. I have mixed emotions. Let me start by saying the band has great potential, members are talented. The crowd loves us and we have 6 gigs booked, Not sure what to do? :? :x :(

every band is a living breathing machine and machine stuff happens to machines, this happened to me you know my band broke up and I revived Rev Machine been looking for a new guitar player, found 1, then I get this yesterday from the drummer:
"Bass Player Wanted…Old Guy Would be Perfect!!!
Date: 2010-03-20, 12:43PM

By Old I mean 50+. We are in the process of putting together a band to do anything from Stones to Steely Dan, Van Morrison to Boz Scaggs…but with our own sound and arrangements. We rehearse once a week in Arlington Hts. We are all experienced and want to play again before we get too dang old. LOL It’s OK if you play in another band but no jobbers or hired guns please. Probably won’t be ready to play out for 3-4 months. We want you to work with us to put together “good” music & if it works out we’ll gig 1 or 2x’s a month. We not putting music together until we find the right bass player. You don’t have to be “super” just solid, flexible, have an open mind and a “get along” team player attitude...we want to add some R&B, funk, jazz influences to well known tunes.

I start laughing  how cool a side project for cigarette money, then I thought what if it isn't meant to be laughable, Bros am I not getting a message, you know I can be a slow learner at times, which part am I missing or is that craigslist ad just a regular heads up?

Man, that sounds like fun! I am a big Boz fan and play Runnin' Blue and Somebody Loan Me a Dime.

A band is not, and should never be a democracy, work on the music together BUT ONE PERSON has to be in charge with final say, material, direction, based on audience feedback and the band's combined attributes. Otherwise it will be like "Herding Cats".

If you are envisioning a career, then you are going to have to think about self preservation first and foremost. The band is a vehicle, and sometimes parts need to be replaced..

Hi 53 Magnatone, every band I've played in for the past 40+ yrs has been a cooperative effort and never had one guy take charge,Ive been in some where some guy tried to take charge and dictate what HE wanted to do and we should do things his way but they were either put in their place quickly or turfed out. With bands like Little Richard's back up band or with Paul McCartney you can see them having one guy calling the shots as he's what the band is about and he gets the big bucks but a regular run of the mill weekend band or even a professional touring band can get along quite well as a unit where each member is equal and has equal input.

I would say first off that you should never let his playing throw you off. You need to always be listening to the drumming first and foremost. If he keeps good time and you both know the songs well, then you shouldn't be thrown off by the Bassist.

I would say, before just kicking him out, you should get together with all members and discuss everyone following the drummer at all times. Then you can get to the bottom of who's missing the grade as a musician by filming a performance or practice. Nobody likes being the weak link in the band, and this is a good way to expose who is. Then if he still can't follow along, nobody should feel bad about finding someone else who can.

Whether it's a timing issue or him not playing the right notes, you just keep on track to what you do and stay on time with your drummer.

Thanks, The band gets nice reviews, but unfortunitely our bubble burst with people turned off by bass player. Hopefully we have problem fixed, and can get back to, having fun as a whole/team.
