The way I see it, everyone has their own opinion... You know the old saying "Opinions are like A**HOLES, everyone has one". Now whether you think Nirvana is the best band of all time, Jim Morrison was the most amazing poet, Janis Joplin was the best vocalist Les Paul the best guitarist or Sid Vicious was a bass god... It doesn't matter... There is going to be someone to agree with you and someone to disagree with you.

And I believe that only a pompous, arrogant, egotistical fool would try to force their opinions on someone else and tell them that they are wrong for having an opinion of their own!

I was "there" (actually "here" in Texas, but you know what I mean) when Nevermind dropped...I was in my early 20s, and I can tell you, that disc, along with Pearl Jam's first disc, totally changed the musical landscape.

A dozen hair metal/shred bands were rendered "old hat" and suddenly nobody wanted to own or play those pointy-headed heavy metal guitars (Kramer, etc.)...which was a good thing to me, I always hated those guitars and most of those bands (Andy Timmons excluded).

The good things Nirvana brought to the table: you didn't have to be able to play 299 notes per minute with machine-like accuracy to rock out; lyrics started progressing past "hot chick, rock out, let's party" and became more poetic and personal again; the "secondary" Fenders like Mustangs, etc. became popular and valuable; and it set up the "do-it-yourself" ethos we see everywhere in music today.

The bad things: Heroin was considered "cool" (but it wasn't just Nirvana that brought that about--there was a whole fashion trend of "Heroin Chic" going on); some good players and bands weren't able to break through or get attention because they weren't playing grunge; and Courtney Love was on the radio.

Cobain wasn't/isn't the greatest thing ever, but he wasn't a slouch, either. I personally think his discography was good (the Unplugged disc had some real flashes of brilliance). He was a tragic figure that self-destructed--and that isn't romantic or cool, that's just sad.

There are too many people here that are so Cobain/Nirvana fixated that it borders on being a fetish.I don't think that's it's healthy to have such a dogmatic obsession to be posting endlessly singing his praises. No matter what you may think of him or how much you may idolize or try to emulate him it becomes a bit much you see fit to post daily as if the rest of us hadn't heard of him/them.I love The Beatles and Hendrix almost to the point of idoltry as I owe a lot to them for influencing me to become a musician but I don't choose to bore people by posting mindless rambling drivel about them daily. If you adore Cobain/Nirvana that much I'm sure that you can find websites where you can converse with other like minded people to your heart's content rather than inflame the situation further.

True but we've seen periods over the years where people on these kinds of forums were fighting about Stevie too. Or Eric. Or the other Eric. Or Jimi. These things come and go. Last month it was John Meyer who got all the controversy. Now it's Nirvana. I try to stay detached from the messy bits if I can. If I expressed my true opinion on every issue that came up here I'd be in more arguments than I could handle. There's just too many silly people to try to educate all of them. When I see a really "out there" post I sing the Refreshments to myself. ♪ ♫ ♫ ♪ Everybody knows...That the world is full of stupid people... ♫ ♫ ♪ ♪ ♪ ♫ and move on to the next thread.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

As irritating as the site being flooded with nirvana related topics is, I don't think personal attacks at floyd are entirely necessary.

Here's a novel idea  How about if you see a thread about a band/artist's favourite songs, if you dont like that band to the point where you are just going to say something negative anyway- how about just clicking "next topic" :?:

Trust me folks- its easy :) try it the next time someone starts another John Mayer thread. Or an SRV thread.

I guess it's ultimately up to the rule makers of the forum who can post what about any band.

You guys are just sick of hearing about it. Which is all fine and dandy.

Im sick of these threads- but you dont see me complaining about it:

MIA vs MIM
Mayer
SRV
Ebay listings
Hendrix
Roadworn
Fake guitars
Fake CS listings

Honestly- tell me something I dont know about these topics already- before our wee nirvana fans start getting personal attacks asking them to stop :)
