my Bro was guitar player for Cannibal in the early '70s and he would do that other guys solo all the time come on Bro you gotta have some fun 3 sets a night 7 nights a week here's Stairway too.

Im not saying you cant play other guys stuff and if my band played 7 nights a week, I'd probably get pretty board too.

But if I was touring nationally, charging $45 a ticket to crowds of 5k-10k, you bet I'd play my own riff. I'd be embarrased not to. If I want to hear Jimmy Page, I'll pay to listen to Jimmy Page. Other wise youre just another cover band...$5 at the door and the lady drinks free on thursday nights.

Dont get me wrong though. I enjoy Lenny and had fun that night. But I wont pay that kind of dough to see him again.

lenny kravitz isnt the only other person to cover songs. If metallica covered die my darling like they sometimes do mix it up, would you be disgusted and go, 'well if i wanted to har the misfits, id go to a misfits gig?"
Lots of people cover songs.

Rolling Stones - champagne and Reefer
Metallica - Die My Darling
Audioslave - Seven Nation Army
Guns n Roses - Knocking on Heavens Door
Green Day - Knowledge
Rob Zombie - Enter Sandman
Motley Crue - Anarchy In The UK
Velvet Revolver - Bodies
Van Halen - You Really Got Me
Jimi Hendrix- Stairway to Heaven
Placebo - 20th Century Boy
Black Eyed Peas - Sweet Child O Mine

So mr Kravitz isnt the only one to mix it up live. All of these bands have. Its a change for them and a pleasure for the audience. I guess you would curse all of those artists for not being original aswell? The Stones are usually about £125 a ticket, in comaparison alot more than $45. Is it an outrage the stones doing it aswell?

8) I like Lenny; it's a tough call because on the one hand, I think he's really talented and quite underrated. On the other, most of the criticism about his lack of originality can sometimes ring true. He borrows, a lot, but to me he takes those influences and makes something of his own out of them. That, of course, is a matter of opinion. His last disc, Love Revolution, was highly underrated.

Jimi Hendricks covering Stairway to Heaven? Someone is yanking your chain as Jimi was dead long before Zep 4,

Lenny Kravitz soaked in the whole late 60s and 70s vibe and got it. I think he is a good performer and rhythm player. The guy who used to play lead with him all those years was an excellent player. I only own the greatest hits album as a friend of mine who had two of his studio albums told me they were not strong and had a lot of filler on them as some have brought up before.I can easily agree with what Jay was told as he always struck me as a Prima Donna.

Eccentric....did you read my post? I wasnt describing him covering other songwriters songs. Of course, he plays covers. Almost everybody covers songs. But thats not what happened or what I said.

What I said was that the lead guitarist was playing the solos from famous songs in the Lenny Kravits songs. Maybe that was his schtick. Maybe his game plan was to copy other guys solos as a tribute to other players. But I dont think so. I think he was just copying other guys solos and didnt intend for anybody to notice. My friend felt the same way and we were disappointed. I dont think its the same thing as covering a song. Its more similar to inserting a few lyrics from somebody elses song into your song as if you wrote it.

I think one could safely say it's all been done before.

I think someone once offered an obscene sum of money to anyone who could come up with so many bars of original music never before written or played and nobody has been able to collect that offer to date.

So that would make every songwriter a "borrower". Just sayin' 8)

well you were insinuating that h doesnt write his songs but steals other peoples. So in response, it was most likely a live thing. If not maybe you can have a listen to his studio recordings and tell us which solos hes supposed to of copied in which of his songs. Im intrigued

Eccentric...I wasnt "insinuating" anything. I was describing my experience with Lenny at a live performance and the fact that I was disappointed. I also said this (its a quote from a previous post, since you dont appear to read them) ....

"Sorry, though. I dont recall what song it was. Further, this was a live performance that might not resemble the studio version. Im never been a huge Lenny fan, but have a number of his songs on my computer and play several of them in my set list. I can say that I have never noticed this solo-copycat issue with any of his studio versions. So it might be an isolated event. But that makes it only less distasteful to me."

Regarding allegations of stealing, I seem to recall actual copyright/royalty lawsuits filed against rappers who were "sampling". Further, I recall publishing houses filing suit against bars and their performing cover bands for royalties related to the covers. Jimmy Page and Led Zepellin were sued for copyright infringement. The plaintiffs alleged LZ effectively copied songs, or parts of songs. LZ settled out of court. So, its clear that Im not alone in my views about "borrowing".

You seem to take this all personally. I didnt think I was being that critical.

i actually do read them, however you can't state something then have no substance to back it up. I dont remember is a bit of a crap excuse.
I'm not taking it personally its called being objective. As far as copyright infringment, none of the above included Lenny, and there have not been any since being an artist. So don't you think if he did then he would have been sued by now? Its not like hes an underground artist and has sold a couple of hundred albums.

Are you suggesting I made it up? How would you suggest I confirm that his guitarist was playing solos from other songs at a single live performance at relatively small club in Minneapolis? I dont have a recording for you. You dont have to beleive me, but I have nothing to gain by my suggestions. Why would I make this up?

But, listen. Its pretty clear your offended. I didnt realize he was your hero. So how about this...."Maybe his guitarist didnt play those solos the two of us guitarist thought we heard"

Feel better?

Not offended at all, but it seems someone mite be. Well Im not asking for a recording. Some examples would be nice. Generally when you go to gigs and either like or hate them you remember things unless you smoke 10kilos of weed a day, or your brains pickled by alcohol. Or your an idiot. Take your pick. I think its clear which one is more evident from your sad patronising remarks.

Actually, I havent smoked 10k/day or pickled by brain by any other means for about 22 years now. So, I guess Im an idiot then  I got a feeling Ive been clean longer than you've been alive. What do you think?

But to your point about going to a gig and remembering things.....I think that was my point, eh, genius? I "remember" his guitarist playing other guys solos. Thats what this idiot remembers most about that evening.

Further, to your suggestion about whether I "either like or hate them"...I never said hated him. I like Lenny. I pretty clearly said I had fun. I also said I play several of "his" songs on my guitar....that's because I like the music....OK genius? It also implies that I recognize that he "writes" music....get it genius? "....his songs"??? The first thing I said was "Im torn..." That's because I sort of like him, but was disappointed by his guitarist playing other guys solos.

Im not asking you to take down his poster, OK? Just relax.

so maybe you pickled you brain 22 years ago as you can't remember whether it was a zepplin solo, or hendrix or whatever (as they were that recognisable!) and you've never been able to get it back. And i think your wrong as i am older than 22 by a few years. sorry to dissapoint, so in retrospect to that I don't put posters on my walls. Also Craig Ross is a very good guitarist and writes alot of songs with Lenny so.....I guess that kinda contradicts what your saying about his music and his guitarist.
