what I mean is, who do you respect, and appreciate as a songwritter, but hate there music??
The only person who comes straight to mind for me is eminem; his songs have very good lyrics, and most of them have a meaning. I hate hip hop, and rap, but i just apreciate eminem as a songwriter....The only rap song i like, would have to be stan.............

Oh I will take the bait on this and give the answer most wou;d want to hear.lol The one and only John Mayer. I really feel the guy is a good writer and would side with him there. It is when guitar God gets put in the mix that I have a problem as there is a wide gap between good and great and a lot goes into it.

As soon as I read the title of this thread that's the first person who came to mind but then I thought about it again and relised I actually think the opposite. I think John's playing is excellent but I find his songwriting to be just bland, commercial, and just plain boring. To me at least.

But I'd also side with Riley on this one; I also dislike Rap music with a vengeance but at the same time I appreciate a lot of the lyrics and social commentary.

One writer I admire immensely but don't really care for his tune is...

drum roll...

Neil Diamond. The man is a mega talent as a song writer but his stuff just isn't my cup of tea. 8)

Haven't heard a lot from him in quite some time. I hope he's well. :D

Metallica. I respect what they do, but dont like their music. Lady Gaga is a recent example, I dont get into pop music like that, but I respect what she does because she is daring to be different, not just be the standard pop star.

Most old 60s/70s rock, lots of great songwriters, but deathly boring to me. Van Morrison, Rod Stweart, Frampton, Blind Faith, The Band, et. al.

Al ot of 80s metal also, hate the music, the hair bands but I recognize a lot of talent.

paul mccartney. I like the songs he did in the beatles and the song he did with the wings for james bond but lennon was a superior writer. Theres just something about him when I see him on tv or in interviews that just doesnt sit right with me. Then again I guess this commen mite not with alot of people!

there's more than a few- but let's start with:

kris kristofferson- wrote "bobby mcgee"- voice just grates on me

willie nelson- wrote "crazy" one of the best songs ever, but he does nothing for me

there is a reason a lot of great writers don't sing their own songs. if you have ever heard burt bacharach or paul williams sing, you'll know what i mean

First Band that INSTANTLY comes to mind is the Dave Mathews band. They are ALL amazing musicians. Every time I see them performing live they are brilliant to watch. I think Dave Matthews such a great guitar player.... however, their music makes me want to hang myself. His voice irratates me in much the same way I guess the Anti Rush establishment rips on Geddy. And the songs just do nothing for me. I could go on about how much i hate that band but i won't.
