I just go another e-mail asking me to enter yet another Fender sweepstakes to win free guitars bla bla bla... which is no stinking good to me because they are U.S. residents only. That just stinks.

And really why is there no Fender Canada... if you need someone to run the business I'll do it give me the job!

Ranting
Joe

Canada borders the States, it would just be stupid to have a Fender Canada, they would lose money having to employ more people unnecessarily.

This was brought up in another thread here, its laws that prevent it and is not FMIC's fault in any way. It has also been pointed out that people from the U.K. have one things here.

It would be alright if Fender had an official Canadian subsidiary then maybe we could get in on Fender sponsered contests,as far as I know some of Fender's international subsidiaries sponsor giveaways etc. The reason we can't partake in such promotions has to do with different gaming regulations, import and excise duties and taxes and a pile of other tangled legalities. It is awfully disenheartening though to be sent an email to win nice gear only to find out once you've filled out the contest entry that only US residents are eligible. They shouldn't be sending us invalid contest come ons,to me it's rubbing salt into the wounds,if we can't possibly win what's the point in sending us these useless entries?

Hi joe_roadhouse_strat, you're not the first one to rant about this, but there is a lot of infos available, do a search. There is many countries with a dedicated Fender site but only one with a FMIC Forum, that is why we all gather here. That site beeing a US entity, it has a lot of legal issues to deal with when doing business with other countries. I remember when I joined, this site was open on business hours, five days a week only. Things change but slowly. Let's bring the project to Dragon's Den, maybe a Canadian entrepreneur will create a Canuck Fender legal entity. :) But wait, we will be gathering here anyway because of the forum. :)

Even though what others have already posted here is very true for most promotional opportunities that we run here, believe it or not ... we actually do plan to offer a complementary American Special prototype giveaway intended specifically for a few European markets. It's a logistical nightmare and we can't do it for every giveaway we run, but this was a case where the opportunity was 'special' enough (no pun intended :-) ) to warrant it. If you're in Europe, keep an eye on your local Fender site (just click the link up at top right that reads "Choose Your Country") as a few local competitions will be launching soon.

Thanks all for your responses. Yes this is a rant. Nothing more nothing less... if you don’t like just leave it.

As for the legalities of Fender’s disposition to the U.S. only sweepstakes and why is there no Fender Canada... well it is just that... red tape legalities that Fender couldn’t bother to cut through for the small Canadian Market. They do just fine selling their product through music stores here in Canada but to actually have Fender Canada is way too costly. Yes Canada borders U.S. but so what. I have always loved Fender product and I always will. I will mostly like always only buy Fender product but the difficult in doing so as a Canadian is disheartening not to mention the Price difference between U.S. and Canada. It’s too bad a guitar in the states is priced at $550 and in Canada I pay $850... from a reputable Fender dealer! Of course I could go on about the sweepstakes issue.. like then just go ahead and make one strictly for Canada... but ya ya the red tape... never mind!

Unfortunately that doesn't help us Canadians.

I do appreciate the forum giveaways where I am eligible to win though. Even though it's no guarantee I'll win, and may never win even if there were one every day.

I do believe that part of the original question is why there is no Fender Canada. Many music gear companies have a Canadian distributor that could offer contests, and some have. But Fender seems to be it's own distributor in Canada from what I can tell.

Oh well. I've encountered this for years-getting US TV stations in Canada and seeing contests I couldn't enter--it's not just Fender, it's most companies offering contests/giveaways/etc.

If Fender was the only one that didn't extend it to Canada or elsewhere, I'd wonder--but Fender is hardly alone in this--because there are laws about it.

And often contests in don't include Quebec because of some of their provincial laws.

ANd I'm not looking for anybody to hand me stuff. If they do great, if not that's okay as well.

Yes! Particularly now that the exchange rate has been favourable for quite a long time. Frankly, I think it'd be easier and cheaper to drive across the border, buy in U.S. dollars, and pay the necessary taxes when crossing back into Canada.

You are so right Prolog, there's no other reason but out and out gouging. Companies have used the difference in the dollar value for years as an excuse to jack up prices and now that there is almost parity they come up with cockamamie reasons why prices are still so out of whack. They say it's customs and taxes, even if it was there shouldn't be near the disparity there is.Cars are another example,if I go to Maine I can buy a new Subaru Impreza for about $23,000 but the same car here will set you back $30,000,it's nothing but a shakedown pulled by the companies and the government regulators are turning a blind eye to it even though it's been proven time and time again on consumer programs such as Market Place. I guess government doesn't want to step on the toes of big business and jeopardize the revenue they collect from them.

Does anybody know if there is a way to register a Fender product online, if you bought it in Canada?

I would, as it wouldn't be too much, I would consider 75% or so discount a win.
