seems the way it worked was, with the mothers, frank would draw the talent out of his musicians and there was a certain amount of freedom allowed for them to shine through. with his solo stuff, it was "do what i tell you, what's on the paper because this is how i want it to sound". not as much room to move with the solo stuff... although he insisted on the chops befor he'd let you in the band in either case, and they were all incredible musicians... chester, jimmy, the fowlers, ruth, adrian, terry... man-o-man... in billy the mountain it was like flo and eddie wore working with the same brain
genius.
